What does NZ Music need?
Posted: Mon Jul 28, 2003 4:31 pm
What do you guys think NZ music needs to grow? Does it need Kiwis overseas to promote and take bands over there? Does it need more publicists? Does it need more media, if so, what sort? Any ideas?

NZ music needs ..

- Independent bands/artists to receive more airplay (on radio and TV)
- More managers/producers etc that are prepared to go that extra mile for bands/artists
- Cheaper engineering and recording sessions, so everyone can afford to make NZ music
- More government funding
- More overseas promotions, including what is already set up (i.e NZ Music nights at Fabric, London etc)
- Bands/artists to perform at more free and/or all ages gigs, so that New Zealanders of any age or wealth can still see and experience live NZ music

I'm sure there'll be more to add at a later stage...

Please note - the above is not the opinion of muzic.net.nz - it's my personal opinion

"- Bands/artists to perform at more free and/or all ages gigs, so that New Zealanders of any age or wealth can still see and experience live NZ music"

It's funny you should say that. Earlier this year I booked bands for an outdoor, free & all ages show and was contacted by a number of well known NZ artists. You should have seen the prices they wanted to charge. It was rediculous. I would have thought I was doing them a favour promoting them, allowing them to come to my home town and play to people who were likely to buy their albums, talk about them at school and request them on the radio stations.

The bands who ended up playing the show were bands I thought were better and some, seemed to have made more of an impact on NZ than these jack off bands requesting thousands of dollars.

Yes - isn't there something that says we should be in it for the music - not the money?

You'd think so. And you can't afford to be money hungry in NZ because the money is simply not there and it will do you no good anyway. The business is too small here.
I think perhaps a few Kiwis need to go overseas and set something up to take kiwi musicians over there like the Spacific guys. It doesn't have to be such a struggle if everyone has a common goal and on the same path.

What happens is the big day out comes to town and pays a local band $12000 and then they go searching for that same money other places in New Zealand. They seem to be forgetting that the Big Day Out is one of the biggest music festivals in New Zealand and it happens in the largest city in New Zealand....

I reckon some of these high profile touring managers would be better off in other countries such as America. That way, they'd be earning more money for their bands and they wouldn't have to be assholes to us smaller people doing it for the love of it, AND they could use their contacts and take NZ bands over there...

Nz music is lacking direction its sitting currently in a fluctuating market that has no garunteed payoff's
Govt funding free airtime and radio play will help bring the market to a level head to the rest of the world.

i think bands should be payed, it depends on how you look at it, the bands for example are doing you a fav. they are what pulls in the crowds and they are what the crowds come to see,
+ musicians shouldnt be working in Mc donalds to pay the bills if of course they are good enough to draw the big crowds ...eg the big day out.
That is why they should be paid... that is where govt. subcity programs should get involved, i think its unfair not to pay the bands.
..and no im not in a band
