Do you pay for Radio Play?
Posted: Fri Jul 18, 2003 6:05 am
Does anyone know if you have a music cd that you have made and want to get air play for it do you have to pay to get it on air or is it up to the radio station to want to play it on air?

I'm assuming no, but you would need to check with each individual radio station.

Of course, whether they play the demo or not would be dependent on a few other factors - for example the quality.

You may find more information here:

I don't know a whole lot... but I've known of other bands sending their cds in to radio stations. If the quality is good enough, people like it and people are requesting it, then they'll play it. I think some radio stations have shows where they play up coming bands or unheard of bands maybe? which helps some bands become popular.

I think once people have requested it heaps and that sort of thing, they might put it on their play list. I could be wrong. The best thing to do is to ring up and ask each individual radio station Razz

Also take into account that most of the mainstream radio stations play from a fixed set of songs, mandated by some bigger authority. So, if your thinking about sending it to a station that plays the same songs about 6-10 times a day, forget it.

And that's why I don't listen to radio.

Getting every person you know to request your song can get it played a few times for a while but getting it on to the play list is another story.

If all else fails, you could try sending it around to the student radio stations - most of which are more than happy to play music by unsigned bands.

Also try vision100.com - this radio station is based in Palmerston North and has a web station set up which plays nothing but New Zealand music.

Isn't it illegal to accept payment for playing particular songs on the radio? It's called PAYOLA...

Please Note:

If you are preparing to have your music played on radio - you may want to ensure that you are signed up with APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Association) and that your songs are registered with them - this way you will get royalties each time one of your songs is played on radio.

exenola means that it is illegal for radio stations to accept payment (in the form of gifts or bribes) from artists in exchange for airplay. That is payola.

It's illegal in the US, but apparently they have found a loophole to get around it - not sure what NZ law says about it, or if it even happens here.
