Interesting documentary on Motley Crue
Posted: Wed Jun 8, 2005 6:18 am
I saw the Motley Crue “Inside Out” documentary on VH1 last Monday night –i loved it! It’s so great to see the behind the scenes stuff on the making of the tours and trying to get the Crue back together. It was crazy to see just how sick Mick Mars was before Crue’s management company found him help and saved his life.

I found an awesome review online somewhere that I wanted you all to read. This review is dead on with my opinions. What did you guys think of the show? I really would love to know if everyone had the same thoughts as me and this reviewer.

³INSIDE OUT² AND UPSIDE DOWN WITH MÖTLEY CRÜE" Documentary Review:

The latest installment of VH1's Inside Out documentary series, ³Resurrecting Mötley Crüe,² is the ultimate reality TV show. It's a shining example of any number of time-worn adages, like ³truth is stranger than fiction² or ³blood is thicker than water² or ³misery loves company² or ³hell is for heroes² or ³my life was saved by rock & roll.² In fact, there are almost as many rock clichés in this VH1 special, which literally takes you behind Behind the Music, than in the hallowed Spinal Tap, but it also boasts an honest-to-goodness happy ending (so far) in its most compelling human interest angle-the resurrection of Mick Mars from his death bed onto the stage with the rest of the Crüe. The spot-on, tightly edited hour restores some much-needed credibility to the somewhat tarnished VH1 programming brand.

You'll marvel at manager Allen Kovac's immortal comment as he tries to convince Tommy Lee to shed his reservations and join the reunion: ³I hear what you're saying, but I don't understand it.² You'll laugh out loud when he tells Nikki Sixx bluntly: ³I liked you better when you were on heroin.² You'll cry when an emaciated Mick Mars shows up for his first face-to-face with the band after receiving a hip replacement to visible shock on their faces. And you'll cheer for Nikki as he cajoles Vince Neil into returning to the office after the singer storms off when he arrives on time for a meeting and the rest of the band isn't there.

You are a fly on the wall as hidden cameras track the band working through their various issues over a deli plate, reluctantly agreeing to reunite before the old camaraderie starts kicking in during a video shoot for the single, ³If I Die Tomorrow² that captures how far each of the individual members has traveled to arrive at the same place.

The by-the-seat-of-their-pants machinations and maneuvering of Tenth Street Entertainment in trying to keep the reunion on track as it threatens to careen out of control offer a textbook example of a management company's heroic efforts (and frenzied negotiations) to produce what the public will see as a seamless, successful arena-rock extravaganza. Behind-the-scenes management execs Jeff Varner, Jordan Berliant and Katie McNeil appear in various forms of distress and anxiety as they take on one hurdle after another to get the job done. They prove more capable than all the proverbial king's horsemen and all the king's men in putting Mötley Crüe back together again.

The final scene, which documents opening night of the ³Red, White & Crüe² tour in Fort Lauderdale last February, brings the show to a triumphant close, and the success has continued through a European tour and a second U.S. leg, ³Carnival of Sins,² which opens in late July and goes through October. The Crüe then plans to continue the world tour in 2006.

VH1's Inside Out proves a worthy addendum to the band's best-selling biography Dirt, which ended on a note of uncertainty for a group that has prided itself on its unpredictability by never doing things the easy way. This time, their penchant for theatrics serves them well in a riveting Wizard of Oz-like peak behind the curtain.

³Resurrecting Mötley Crüe² may not save your life like it did Mick Mars', but it's guaranteed to shed some light on the ghosts inside (out) the rock machine. --Roy Nikart 06/01/05
