Rock Rocks!

I'm sure I'm not the only person who is starting to get real sick of seeing all these rap topics, so how about having one for rock music?

Sure, there is more rap on TV and on the radio these days (yawn)- but rock music is still well and truly alive and there's no reason why we can't prove that to our fellow forum goers.

I'm starting to think that some people are blinded by rap music and can't see outside the square.. they don't seem to realise that there is more to this world than rap music, and that rock music is much more interesting to listen to. Rock musicians are far more talented, put more thought and imagination in to their music and videos and have an awesome stage presence that can't be surpassed by any other genre.

Besides, you can't headbang to rap, can you?

Rock vocalists are more likely to perform live than any other genre. Rock vocalists are also more likely to be able to play another instrument, and in some cases can play more than one instrument. Sure, anyone can sing but it takes real talent to be able to play an instrument- and most rockers can play their instruments with more class and style than a synthesised rap beat will ever know.

For those people who think the only thing going on in NZ at the moment is Rap, I think it is time you started living your life more and experience some real music- you'll probably find that you will enjoy rock music more than rap music. Besides, there are definitely more rock musicians in this country than there are rap singers- if you don't believe me just take a stroll through this site.

There are so many reasons why rock music is better than rap - it's been around for longer, is liked by more people, sells more albums than any other genre and rock musicians perform for longer than musicians in any other genre. Some of these musicians have been going for 30+ years and are showing no signs of slowing down.

When I first came to this site I created the forum 'What is up with all this rap', and after reading the support for what I said (thanks guys!) and the complaints (some people missed the point completley)- I think it's time for us to move on and talk about how great rock music is for a change. I'm sick of hearing people going on about how great and wonderful rap music is, so let's tell them how awesome and amazing rock music is!

(btw Where I have mentioned rock music in this forum, I'm talking about anything related to rock music .. that is, metal, punk, alternative etc.)

Wrong. "Anyone" cant sing, it takes just as much talant as playing an instrument if you want to do it good.

I'll stick to underground metal.

None of these are good reasons.

Old rock is amazing (stuff like old metallica, ac/dc, gnr, scorpions, etc...), not this new age emo rock, like opshop or eight (boring strummers with whiny voices and no solo).

Lol, i must sound like an old man Happy

Metal is not in any way related to punk, alternative, rock, etc...

I'd have to disagree that Rock and Metal aren't related, i mean would you class Black Sabbath as Metal or Heavy rock? what about the influence that Deep Purlpe and Led Zep had on Metal that was to follow. Bands like Metallica , Iron Maiden etc.. openly admit to being influenced by those guys,
without those groups there wouldn't be Heavy Metal.

You are fully right, exept one thing. What you are describing is called "classic rock" these days, and fully has the same roots as metal. But what I meant is the "new age rock", you know, boring strumming with no distortion, no solo, whiny vocals, etc. Same with Nu-Metal.

...Also, if you get into the more extreme genres of metal, for example black metal shares its roots with classical music, and has nothing in common at all with the likes of black sabbath.

Oh Christ, now they're going to argue about how metal isn't related to rock, or about how nu-metal isn't real music, or how punk has no talent, or bah!! who cares??? Geezas I'm sick of these stupid forums that argue about what genre's they think is better. Can't we just discuss how great rock music is like phatgirl originally proposed?

One of my presonal favourite rock artists are the Smashing Pumpkins. Their music is just incredible. I think their best album is Siamese Dream, it's in my opinion, the perfect album. It kicks off with full on, pure rock with Cherub rock and Quiet, then begins to come down with Hummer and Disarm. It also has epics such as Mayonaise, but winds down with an awesome ending love song Luna.
Despite what some people say, I think their last album Machina is also one of their best, it's the perfect wind down to one the greatedt bands of the 90's.

Other rock artists that that I like, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Silverchair, Shihad, Queens of the Stone age

Just trying to make an interesting discussion here, other then this turning into another boring favorite bands topic. Anything wrong with that?

Rock Rocks
it's simple.
heavey metal etc..
it all rocks... why?
because of guitars.
it's all about the tone vibrations of those wonderful tight little strings..
and of course those power house fingers that bend, slide and break them, that really rocks.

i started my desire to rock, way back when.
twisted sister, at the time Rocked the shit. for me in my world.
by the time i got the wooden six string beauty, (cheap arse strat, looked much like what robert cray has on his strong pursader, record. sunburst)
i was hooked on motorhead and iron maiden.
which was soon followed by mettalica (ride the lightening)
and Slayer (reign in blood)
i was blinded in an instant. guitars poured out of every wall, nouk and cranny.
Mr Green and thats when the sickness took hold of me, i've never been the same since.
since then, my guitar has taken me thru the worlds of hendrix, the lenghty world of Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan power house blues.
Zakk wylde & randy Rhoads, lightening screams and bends.
slash's pure note solos.

and then there was the dark ages.
the 90's.

rock was blanketed, and stored under beds, carboards and kitchen tables alike.
i remeber those days as if it were yesterday. these were bad years for rock.
it looked all as if it was going to die.
and what comes forth and shakes it?
old buggers.
rolling stones released, Voodoo Lounge
Aerosmith released, Get a Grip.
and rock was breathing again.

bon jovi? looked like a real band, and did Keep the Faith.
Slash Dumps Axl, & Slash's Snakepit Arrives.

i'm now playing in a what may be called Hard Rock Band.
(check it out, 80 Proof)
www.80proof.co.nz
i get to play around and do them slash style posess, and break my strings bending them to Africa.
and feel the power of air, as i stand there among the quad boxes as two Les pauls hammer out the rhythm or songs like "backdoor girl & Lady Finger "

rocks alive and well.
all it really needs is surporters of live local bands..
thats where rap pissess over rock.
people here who buy into that rap crap, can get it here and be happy with the result.

where as with rock loving people, here we seem to be only really interested if it's been on american mtv.
shihad have change style since it's early years, but not till genral electric did people really care.
why?

so really fuck rap.
how cares about it, like a small otago town, it'll insest it'self to death.
