Sideways, produced by Chronic Shnxman, is the final single to be released from Young Gho$t’s upcoming project Hungerstruck, before it comes out on December 6th. The track is a departure from his signature grimey style, and represents a new direction for this London-born kiwi. Here, he plays with autotune to great effect, creating a radio-ready banger that is anthemic in its approach. The title and chorus are a nod to Paul Wall's iconic 2005 hit, Sittin' Sideways, which is fitting of its leaned out vibe and approach, however the sound is 808-drenched and polished, more reminiscent of newer rappers such as Future or M Huncho. In his lyrics, Gho$t navigates the abyss of intoxication that is familiar to us all, and is far removed from his usual calculating self, sliding around on top of the glossy beat while Shnxman’s percussion grunts away underneath. The effect is hypnotising, with the song representing a new era of sound for the bearded lyricist.
Rvnnah (pronounced Runner) is another steady riser from Wellington, a member of the NVRSFT crew who has become well known online for his infectiously catchy hooks set against rock solid production. He has collaborated with Gho$t once previously, on NVRSFT squad cut Two Minds Ten Moods, and has a debut project of his own coming out in 2020. Gho$t credits Rvnnah for getting him into a lot of auto-tuned music in the first place that inspired him to make this song, and they both sound at home on this track.
The new album, Hungerstruck will be out on December 6th, and includes features from Hxrman, Lil Dust, LBFRmikey, Stonrsmurf, Chronic Shnxman and Rvnnah, as well as production from Scapegoat Mercy, Shnxman, Elder, Carcass and Kanakin.
