Young Lyre deliver an indie-pop fuelled EP, Providence

17 May 2019 - 0 Comments

Indie-rock/pop five-piece Young Lyre have followed up the release of their recent singles - Astore and Nobody Else - with their third EP, Providence.

Listen on iTunes / Apple / Spotify

The five-track EP takes the listener on a journey. From the super cool and catchy opener Astore and the brooding title track; to the uplifting earworm, Nobody Else and the extended outro Part II, Providence is a succinct slice of indie-pop and rock.

See below for the band’s track-by-track.

Young Lyre has its origins as a high school Smokefree Rockquest, and has evolved to be in its current format for more than 10 years. Jordan (lead vocals), Matt (bass and BVs), Si (drums and BVs), Sanjay (guitar/synth) and Kiran (guitar/synth) are a blast of indie-pop to be reckoned with. They are often likened to acts such as Tame Impala and Phoenix, but make no mistake - Young Lyre has a sound all of their own and they stand out loud and clear in New Zealand’s thriving music scene.

Providence Track-by-track - by lead vocalist Jordan Curtis, who wrote all of the lyrics for the EP tracks:

Astore
Astore is almost like a travel diary: it’s a collection of memories strung together into a song. Most of the references in the song are about time I spent travelling in northern Pakistan a number of years ago. Astore is the place where I recorded some of the more memorial experiences I had, like riding on the roof of a jeep through the Himalayas, missing my plane to India because of visa trouble, and meeting some incredible people along the way.

Providence
Lyrically Providence isn’t really about a specific experience - it’s one of those songs where the musical idea had a certain mood, and I tried to put myself into that space and write lyrics that fit with the tone of the song. It's a little brooding, but still with a lot of energy and some lighter moments. So the song is about relationships, misunderstandings and wanting to fix something without knowing quite how.

Honiara
Honiara is mostly about the time I spent in the Solomon Islands working on a flood relief project, but it has references to other experiences elsewhere as well. At the core of the song is this idea of entering into another person’s world, connecting with them and building a relationship, and then after some time leaving and perhaps never returning. It’s quite sad I suppose.

Nobody Else
Nobody Else is pretty much just a fun song. Sanjay came up with the original idea, and I remember hearing the bass line for the first time and thinking I have got to come up with something good for this! So for this one I worked with the melody and the phrasing first and then fit the words around it. As for what it’s about… I think this one is up to listener.

Part II
The extended outro was something we would always do when we played the song together live, and we wanted to capture that when we recorded it. It was a lot of fun in the studio layering up all the different textures and experimenting to create something that was a little less structured than the rest of the EP. Once we had it tracked we thought it might work well as an outro for the EP, so that’s where it ended up.
