The Mons Whaler Drop Spellbinding New Single 'Blood'

Hot new Taranaki alt-swamp-blues band The Mons Whaler drop spellbinding new single Blood ahead of their debut LP release this March.

STREAM BLOOD HERE

A sublime tune imbued with a deeply-felt and haunting melancholia, Blood is a deep-cut rolling groove featuring a beguiling steel guitar, feather-light piano and gloriously harmonious backing vocals - all melding to warmly elevate an authentic blues-soaked vocal.

In essence, Blood is a song from the heart about whānau, the dynamic multi-layers of the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions that bind us from our past, our present, and into our future. Referencing the cyclical nature of our upbringings, Blood connects all that we learn from our parents and wider familial experiences, and how this is reflected in the way we choose to parent ourselves. It also comments on the hurt we collectively feel for each other when we are going through tough times.

Mastered at Kog Studio, Blood was produced and mixed by Sam Johnson at Rhythm Ace Studio. Recorded start to finish in what was a magical end of session one-take wonder, the song you hear is the very first take the band live tracked, from start to finish in its entirety.

Says Hemi: “While recording Blood we had 10 minutes before the end of an 8-hour recording day to “show” Sam (Rhythm Ace Studio) the song we would attempt to record the next day. This being Sam’s first listen and also with the song being vastly different from our other ones, we thought it would take a while. So we quickly changed everything over and started jamming the song. Something about that first take felt magic. Sam came in speechless and said we’ve got it. Thankfully he hit the record button! We didn’t even attempt it again.”

The Mons Whaler are an innately chilled outfit who deliver a spine-tingling fusion of coolly controlled blues, rock and soul. With their signature warm neo-vintage sound of swampy alt-blues, tight rhythm section, and velvet vocals, Hemi Coates (vocals/guitar), Andre Peri (percussion/backing vocals), Phil Hoskin (bass guitar/backing vocals) and Courtnay Low (keys/lead guitar/backing vocals) are turning heads and generating a serious buzz both in live circles and across the music industry.

Previous singles off their debut EP Online and Won’t Let You Go are both accompanied by stunning videos, revealing that these creatives are truly dedicated to serving up stylish, conceptualised visuals to fully complement their growing body of art, with another single and video set to drop in the near future.

Undoubtedly one to watch, The Mons Whaler is an impressive band with their own unique blend of talent, passion, and creativity who are fast building a solid fan base as they continue to captivate audiences with their collection of accomplished tunes and electrifying live performances. Recent live highlights include stellar performances at Rock The Bowl, The Festival of Lights, and a string of sold out local shows of their own.

Keep your eyes peeled and ears to the ground for your chance to check out their bewitching vibe live, as next up will be a 4-day run of dates to celebrate the release of their upcoming debut long-player in March.
