Local Tauranga DJ and Producer Louis Ross has created a new song Here to Help to bring awareness to mental health issues ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week.

After losing his father and Grandma within a few months of each other and navigating his way through loss and grief, Louis is combining his own mental health struggles with his love of music to help others.

With Gumboot Friday and World Suicide Prevention Day taking place within the last few months, New Zealand has been served with a bitter yet necessary reminder of the devastating mental health statistics that encapsulate the country. After seeing firsthand the type of effects that mental health issues can have, Louis has worked hard to turn his negative experiences around to focus on helping others.

Louis started writing Here to Help to let people know that they aren’t alone, that there is help out there, and that they have people they can turn to whenever they need it.

“If nothing else, I want this song to help people realise that they aren’t alone. It’s okay to ask for help, and it's okay to feel upset, lost, and unhappy. The most important thing is to open up, let people know how you feel, and ask for help.

“Speaking out about struggling with mental health doesn’t make you weak, if anything, it makes you strong. These are the people we need to hear from. These are the people who have the power to rewrite the scripts around mental health and help others overcome their struggles.

“It took me about a year to make this song and it's the longest song I've ever worked on. I'm proud of what we have created and I couldn't thank the features enough for lending their beautiful talents to my big project,” Louis says.

The track Here to Help features rappers Sunshine Ted and Zap, along with singer Lisa Westerby and Matt Bizzle who provides some beautiful saxophone playing.

About Louis Ross:
Louis Ross is a 25-year-old producer and DJ from Tauranga, New Zealand. Louis gets his musical talents from his mother, who used to be an opera singer and his father, who taught him how to play the guitar at just 7 years old. At 18, Louis began DJing and a few years later he stepped into the world of producing. As he continues to grow and develop as a DJ, writer, producer and singer, Louis is constantly expanding the genres that he explores, bringing into his music hints of House, Tropical House, Hip-Hop/RnB and DnB, as well as his own singing, nd instrumental talents as a guitar and drum player.
