James Loan Releases New EP on 5 March

25 February 2021 - 0 Comments

James Loan is a 16-year-old rap and drill artist from Auckland. He has been designing for some four years, and a year ago decided to expand and turn his ideas into an audio format, writing and making songs talking about his upbringing and life. Inspired by Green Day, Aitch, Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD in particular, he soon produced his first track, Save Me. He feels he has moved on a great deal since then, but still wanted to make it available so people can understand how much he has improved in a short period of time.

During the final four months of working on the EP, James improved his lyric writing and wordplay while producer Leo Main Bennett was always by his side in his home studio improving on beats and learning fundamentals of mixing and mastering his tracks to find the sound. All beats on the EP were made by various producers, while Javelin was produced, mixed, and mastered by Leo.

Growing up, James’s mother left when he was just two years old, and he lived with his dad in Dunedin, where he fell into a world of violence and antisocial behaviour. However, when he was 14, he moved to Auckland with his dad and step mum and was determined to get his life back on track. He did this by focusing on his creative ability, driving to prove he could achieve everything he wanted to in the music scene, and his debut EP is the result.

When asked about the EP, James described each song as follows: -

1. Save Me P.2. This track is radio friendly with no swearing, and talks about my childhood and upbringing, and is based on my first song, Save Me. I think that song had a lot of potential but because I was so new to music, it was poorly created, therefore I wanted to touch back on it and make a very similar song with deeper meaning and better lyrics and show how much I've improved. The song was mainly made for my dad as he really wanted to hear me use my voice and talk about my upbringing, so that song was purely dedicated to him. He wanted me to make a catchy radio friendly song, so I made it just for him.

2. Wild West. This touches on when I was living in Dunedin on the west side, talking about some of the things that happened in those days. This song is explicit, but I wanted to make a catchy, repetitive drill song.(explicit)

3. Javelin. This was mainly a freestyle, but I did not tell anyone. People are waiting on this song because I leaked a snippet on my Instagram live and it was screen recorded and posted around by a few people on their stories. This probably will be the song that gets the most attention by my youth on the EP purely because of its beat and catchy, creative, fun lyrics. (explicit)

4. The Response. Released as a teaser to the EP before Christmas, along with the music video, I made this track purely to get back at all the hate from when I started music, talking about my struggles as I reflect on my past to present talking about the struggling of mental health, hatred, and mockery that I received from those surrounding me in everyday life.(explicit)

5. Slayer. This is about my time in the streets of Dunedin and getting money however I could. This also features UK artist Tee-Em who was on the Under 18 Blackbox freestyle video on YouTube. That gained him attention, and I hit him up on Instagram with an open verse on Slayer and he had his verse done and mastered really fast. Easily one of my favourite songs on the EP. (explicit)

6. Outro. This was a freestyle that I posted on Instagram using a different beat. However, after the post got attention, I was constantly being asked to make it into a song, so I recorded it and made it the final song on the EP. (explicit)

The Loan To Society is available on all platforms on 5th March.
