Band & Musician News - Electronic Indie Pop Duo Imugi Serve Up Two Pop Bangers

Electronic Indie Pop Duo Imugi Serve Up Two Pop Bangers

19 February 2021 - 0 Comments

Tamaki Makaurau’s Imugi are thrilled to be able to deliver two brand new pop gems, the double single release Swimming / Memories today.

Hot off the tail of their stunning EP Dragonfruit, which had fans swooning over stand-out tracks Greensmoke, Be Here Soon, Somebody Else and Church & AP collab Y U Always Acting Like A Fool?, this prolific pair wasted no time in completing their unfinished projects that were compromised by the events of 2020.

Recorded at RedBull Studios NZ and mixed by super-engineer Ben Lawson, the sessions were interrupted by the COVID19 lockdowns last year. Fittingly, the abrupt nature of the pandemic meant a sudden shift from the steady workflow of the working studio, back into the bedroom studio, reinforcing Imugi's creative philosophy that anything created by any means, has a right to exist. Having devoured the juicy goodness of this new fruit, we couldn’t agree more!

Since early days, the duo’s musical journey has been closely enmeshed with long-time collaborator and good friend Hans’. attending the same high school and coming from similar cultural backgrounds. A collaboration aligned by the stars, identities threaded together by their migrant Kiwi-Korean upbringings, Hans. and Imugi lovingly drop the next single of their creative journey together.

Cited by Zane Lowe as one of his favourite NZ rappers, playing SXSW, and opening for international superstar Billie Eilish, Hans. has always kept it humble as he defined his playful and meaningful sound in Auckland’s hip-hop scene.

Beyond the two year process of creating Dragonfruit, Swimming was birthed from a carefree jam between the three. The back and forth between Hans. and Yery Cho is smoothly disguised as an easy-going party song with Carl Ruwhiu’s phat beats and Hans.’ head bopping hooks and sweet flow.

The honest track openly expresses the coping mechanisms we often turn to in order to resist the changes that confront us during our formative years. As the title suggests, often all we can do is let go with the flows that arise in each twist and turn of life.

The second bouncy single off Imugi’s double feature release is Memories, a candid track questioning the validity of external perceptions and the forces that shape our motives.

Catchy and honest, the duo break through the smoke and mirrors of the industry, and the toxic ways in which it affects the psyche of young artists. Still independent and unapologetic as ever, the electronic Auckland two-piece return to affirm that no one can dictate nor define the divine energies and purpose within, as “...I can do basically what I want with my appearance, my attitude and it doesn’t matter.”

Singer-songwriter Yery, and producer-beatmaker Carl, continue to organically create cleverly immersive and perfectly formed aural delights - the perfect distillation of their collective and shared experiences. This captivating duo masterfully navigate their dynamic and collaborative journey together, creators of a destiny aligned by the stars.

Meanwhile fans can expect more new music releases from Imugi throughout 2021, and make sure to catch them performing at upcoming Splore Festival 26 – 28 February!
