Weta Release 20th Anniversary Edition Of 'Geographica'

19 February 2021 - 0 Comments

Weta have released the 20th Anniversary re-release of Geographica, remastered to Vinyl.

Celebrating 20 years of the platinum selling debut, and in memory of lead singer and guitarist Aaron Tokona, the band have announced a remastered release of Geographica to vinyl, and for the first time, it will be available out of Australia.

To coincide, a deluxe digital re-release to streaming platforms will include bonus live tracks, studio out-takes and B-sides including So Far, So Close, the recently re-discovered recording originally planned as the album’s first single.

Weta came to attention following 1999's release of the Natural Compression EP, achieving gold sales in NZ and Australia and producing radio hits Let It Go and Got the Ju.

The band relocated to Melbourne after signing to Warner Music Australia, with the resulting touring schedule solidifying the band as one of New Zealand's finest live acts and endearing the band to Australian audiences and the music industry.

However, it was the band’s debut long player, Geographica, released in September 2000 and produced by Grammy Nominee Steve James, that defined the band’s dynamic palette of soundscapes, musical diversity, and distinctively unique approach to songwriting. The 11-track album generated popular and critical acclaim, with the NZ Herald’s Russell Baillie calling it the “best local release of the year” and earning accolades ‘Most Promising Band’ and ‘Most Promising Vocalist’ at the 2000 New Zealand Music Awards.

Despite peaking at Number 8 on the NZ album charts and generating platinum sales, Weta broke up following a much-anticipated nationwide tour with Shihad and Fur Patrol. Without a band to support it, Geographica was never released in Australia, remaining unfinished business for the band, prompting Aaron to start reaching out to the band in the early months of 2020.

Sadly, Aaron passed away 3 months before seeing his vision for Geographica’s 20th Anniversary re-release fulfilled. In response, and in collaboration with Warner Music, the remaining members of Weta have focused the release “in honour of our dear friend, our brother, and a uniquely talented musician. The 20th Anniversary release celebrates Geographica as a defining point in Aaron's lifelong career dedicated to making music that has inspired joy, provided lasting memories, and has touched the lives of countless people all around the world”.
