Midge Marsden

Bio

Midge Marsden is virtually without equal. His career spans four decades, he has played thousands of concerts to countless people and he has performed with a list of artists that reads like a definitive Who's Who of New Zealand Rock. In 1990 he was voted New Zealand Entertainer of the Year and later his critically acclaimed album Burning Rain went gold.

Midge has performed in London in conjunction with the All Blacks 1997 British Tour, the highlight of which was performing to a sold out crowd at the 1000 seater Walkabout with guest appearance by All Black no 7, Josh Kronfeld. This was filmed live and televised to all of New Zealand on the Holmes Show. The band also managed to secure a peformance at the world famous Soho venue Ronnie Scotts.

Midge has toured the USA four times now, focussing mainly on California, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Each time he has met up with some exciting musicians including Willie Foster, Bobby Mack, Ronnie Taylor, Dave Boyle and JulieAnne Banks, all of whom have toured New Zealand with Midge.

It was during one of these tours that Midge was a student at the University of Mississippi in 1996 where he graduated with a Diploma in Southern Studies. Recently named an Old Blues Cat, Midge fills in the gaps of his busy touring schedule as a tutor at the Waikato Polytechnic where his specialist subject is ... Bluesology, what else??

Midge has always enjoyed a close association with the New Zealand Syndicate for the America's Cup. He originally moved to San Diego to support the crew in their unsuccesful bid for the Cup in 1992, where he and band played to the many syndicates. However, the day of the last race of the America's Cup in San Diego 1995, Midge received a call in Raglan at 10am, inviting him to play at the Victory celebration at the Black Magic camp. At 7pm that same day he boarded a flight departing Auckland for Los Angeles and then onto San Diego. Upon arriving he played to the celebrating New Zealand crew and supporters for seven hours.

Midge has become a household name and icon in New Zealand, not only through his live performances but also with regular appearances on television shows such as 60 minutes, Holmes, Air NZ Holiday, Lotto, Showcase, Ansett Time of your Life and Crimewatch, just to name a few.

Midge Marsden remains the number one Rhythm and Blues artist in NZ today. A combination of red-hot musicians and unbridled energy combine to guarantee a rage every show... that is why when the crew of Black Magic wanted a party, they called Midge Marsden.
