Jean-Paul Sartre Experience

Bio

Out of the urge to just see a poster that said The Jean Paul Sartre Experience, the band of that name was formed in Christchurch, New Zealand, by bassist/vocalist David Yetton and drummer Gary Sullivan. Guitarist David Mulcahy joined and guitarist Jim Laing was added a year later as the band started performing in 1985.

A self-titled 5 track EP was released to critical praise. A full studio album, 'Love Songs', followed in 1987 containing the addictive pop gem 'I Like Rain' and the single 'Flex'. The success of the album led to a release of 'Love Songs' worldwide that contained the best of both albums. By 1988, the band already written enough material for a follow-up and entered the studio.

In 1990, 'The Size Of Food' was released. Keyboardist Russell Baillie was added the next year as the band relocated to Aukland and the band released the non-album single 'Precious'. After touring that year, releasing the EP 'Breathe' and recording music for film 'Crush', the group went back to it's original line-up. The single 'Breathe' from the EP made it into New Zealand's Top 10.

In 1993, the band was forced to shorten their name to the JPS Experience by the estate of Jean-Paul Sartre. Prior to the release of their new album 'Bleeding Star' that same year, the band released the well received single 'Ray Of Shine.' Guitarist David Mulcahy left the band shortly after and was briefly replaced by Solid Gold Hell guitarist Matt Heine but after a short time touring the band unofficially split. In 1996 David Yetton and Gary Sullivan formed The Stereo Bus but by the 1998 self-titled release Sullivan wasn't with the band and started drumming for Solid Gold Hell where oddly enough the band borrowed Matt Heine from. Sullivan was last seen with the band Dimmer.

The following year, The Stereo Bus released 'Brand New'. Jim Laing's project Lanky took a bit more time where he initially met some band members jamming back in 1992. In 2000, Lanky released their debut album 'Wait'.

Dave Mulcahy went on to form the band Superette with David Yetton and release the EP 'Rosepig' in 1995 and album 'Tiger' in 1996 before going solo in 1998.
