Betchadupa

Bio

Betchadupa was an Auckland rock band fronted by Neil Finn's son Liam. Betchadupa was formed in the late 90s, around the nucleus of second-generation rock musicians Matt Eccles and Liam Finn.

The two formed a musical partnership in their early teens that, with the addition of friends Garland and Bramley, has resulted in two fine EP's and a top 10 NZ album for the Flying Nun label. After some top gigs in NZ and Australia throughout 2002/3 inlcuding an Australian tour with Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age, the band moved to the US market and they also performed at a showcase gig at the 2003 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

Formerly known as Lazy Boy, they released the single Brighter Sound on the soundtrack to the Australian movie 'Cut', before changing their name to Betchadupa.

Betchadupa's album The Alphabetchadupa was released in 2002 and enjoyed a three week stay in the top 10 NZ Album Charts peaking at #2.

Band Members:

Betchadupa & Flying Nun Part Ways
Posted: Mon Apr 28, 2003 11:44 am
Thanks to NoiZyland for this info...

Betchadupa have apparently ended their association with Flying Nun after failing to agree with the venerable label on terms for a new contract. New Zealand Musician magazine reports the sticking point was the band's desire for a one album NZ-only contract (keeping their options open, one would imagine). No sign of the news on either the Betchadupa or Nun websites, but we'll endeavour to find out what the story actually is.

If true, it's a bit of a pity for the Nun, who had nurtured the 'Dupa lads through two EPs and a top 10 NZ album, and might have been looking forward to a pay-day out of the rising stars. Oh well. (Although one would think Flying Nun's recent decision to re-release some classic offerings from the likes of the Gordons and The Clean on CD shows the classic indie label realises where its strengths lie. Bring on the Straitjacket Fits re-releases, we say.)

Betchadupa to tour OZ with Queens Of The Stone Age & Pearl Jam
Posted: Thu Jan 16, 2003 5:36 pm
Thanks to NoiZyland for this info:

Young Auckland rockers Betchadupa have scored themselves a major coup with the announcement they’re to support Queens Of The Stone Age at their BDO sideshows in Australia. And the songs they ripped out with Mr Eddie Vedder at Neil Finn's all-star concert a couple of years back has obviously impressed enough for them to be asked on a 9 date tour with Pearl Jam, also in Australia, in February. Here's the dates…

With Queens Of The Stone Age

- January 23rd Sydney Metro
- January 24th Sydney Enmore Theatre
- January 28th Melbourne The Palace

With Pearl Jam and The Healers

- Feb 8th - Brisbane Entertainment Center
- Feb 9th - Brisbane Entertainment Center
- Feb 11th - Sydney Entertainment Center
- Feb 13th - Sydney Entertainment Center
- Feb 14th - Sydney Entertainment Center
- Feb 16th - Adelaide Entertainment Center
- Feb 18th - Melbourne Rod Laver Arena
- Feb 19th - Melbourne Rod Laver Arena
- Feb 20th - Melbourne Rod Laver Arena

And anyone seen the Betchadupa homepage recently? Check out their live photos. Classic.

Want To Be In The Next Betchadupa Video?
Posted: Wed Sep 4, 2002 6:01 pm
They\'re needing extras to make up the live punters at a gig for the next Betchadupa music video in cold old Christchurch on Tuesday, 17 of September - at the back bar of the Wunderbar in Lyttleton, so if you\'re keen .. drop the guys a line at [email protected]

The filming for the live performance part of the clip will be inside the bar and they need a sweaty, enthusiastic crowd for the evening. You\'d be needed for about 3 hours all up roughly between 8 - 11pm.

You need to be between 18 and 28. Let them know your name and ph/mob number so they can contact you with any further info.
