The Low Spark

Bio

The Low Spark formed in Dunedin under the name The Tomahawks in 2004. In parts evocative of Neil Young epics, of brutal Nick Cave narratives, and of the dense, sonic assault of Radiohead, their music could be broadly described as lyrical rock – the instrumentation carefully layered to create a dynamic and expansive backdrop for the voice.

They promise they are not fashion victims riding musical bandwagons, or singing with phony accents for invisible foreign markets. In short, they play music because they love it. After a year and a half of honing their sound, songs, and performance, they set about finding out how they’d come across on record.

Their initial efforts (as The Tomahawks) yielded their first single 'Yesterday's Drink', which subsequently held the 1 spot on Dunedin's BNet station Radio One for two weeks, and also featured on the Radio One 2006 Sampler album. After this initial success, The Low Spark decided recording an album would be a healthy exercise in stress and self-development so they began recording in late 2006. The album took shape over a year, giving the band a decent opportunity to experiment with their songs, and enough time to fully develop a sound, utilising Dunedin's Albany Street Studio for tracking in - a room modelled off the famous BBC 1 studio at Abbey Road. The album was then mixed and mastered by the brilliant Dale Cotton (Conray, HDU, Dimmer, Paul McClaney, Die! Die! Die!) who worked closely with the band to capture its musical identity.

In addition to Cotton's assistance, musical icon Graeme Downes lent his song-writing and production expertise. Their debut album 'Out In The Ozone' was released in August 2007.

The Low Spark have performed extensively over the past few years (initially under their original name). They are now currently based in Auckland where it’s said they’re enjoying traffic jams and the Asian Food Courts.
