Reshma

Bio

She's a rising star in the Malaysian music industry - now this Taranaki-raised 22-year-old has her eyes set on bringing her unique sound and story to New Zealand shores.

Reshma releases her debut English-language single today as part of a release campaign that promises to add an exciting, diverse voice to the growing number of women making waves in Aotearoa's pop music scene.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Reshma followed her roots to kick-start her creative pursuits and quickly made a splash in the country of over 32 million, appearing as a teenager in the final season of hit Malaysian reality singing competition, Akademi Fantasia, in which she eventually placed third.

She was the only female minority representing her ethnic group to ever compete on the show in its 13-season entirety, and became a figurehead of unity and change in the local entertainment industry.

On the back of her impact on audiences of Akademi Fantasia, Reshma's Malaysian following quickly grew to an influential level, experiencing a kind of success completely unfamiliar to New Zealand audiences over the past four years.

However, she's always held a burning ambition to release music in the country she grew up in, where the South East Asian community is chronically under-represented. With full backing from her Malaysian fan base, that day has now come with the release of 'loneliest girl'.

"My Malaysian fans had encouraged me to try to tackle the overseas market, where my talent could do Malaysia proud, and be recognised for its worth," Reshma says.

"Loneliness is a pandemic of its own, plaguing our generation in so many shapes and forms. This song aims to relate to all communities, an anthem of sorts, to give listeners the validation that feeling lonely is more than okay, especially in these times."

Paying homage to her Malaysian roots, whilst staying true to a commercial pop sound, Reshma aims to add colour and diversity to Aotearoa's music industry, whilst paving the way for a larger South East Asian presence in the mainstream music culture worldwide.
