locrates

Bio

Born Daniel Jon Murray, locrates is an Auckland based Beatsmith, known previously as Shephurd - Producer of the record label UTL.

Currently locrates is an instrumental artist, composing works to be played under live synth and sample riffs via a Turntable, Sample pads, & Keys.

His signature sound consists of a merger of sounds from East Coast "Boom-Bap" & Southern "Trap" Hip-Hops, as well as a Bristol "Trip-Hop" sound, which could be boiled down to the genre term "TripTrap". A heavy, dark driving beat, laced with whispers of choppy melodic beauty.

locrates includes DJ U-Neek, Havoc, Pink Floyd, Portishead & DJ Krush as his major influences.

He also self produces the YouTube series "project locrates" - A "behind the scenes of an artist" approach to visual content for an audio-based art-form.

Under the name Shephurd, locrates released a handful of instrumental beat-tapes and an EP titled Exit 420, released with the support of the "Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party" & "The Grow & Brew Shop".
