The Fanatics

Bio

It’s not that The Fanatics don’t like drummers, they just don’t need them. Unless they’re short of a beer… This two-piece from Auckland, has followed proudly in the footsteps of un-likeminded duos Simon & Garfunkel and Lee & Nancy, captivating listeners the length of the country over the past year. Playing skewed electro-rock, The Fanatics blend dark electronic beats and programmed bass lines with taut angular guitar, and a definite knack for bent pop lurking somewhere in the mix. The duo of David Green (vocals, programming) and Tom Clark (vocals, guitar) punch above their weight in numbers, proving there’s no need for a rhythm section when you have a laptop, a guitar and bouncing off the walls live energy.

With a nationwide Low Hum tour under their belts as well as numerous appearances in Auckland and elsewhere, The Fanatics have honed their ability to not only keep a crowd paying attention, but actually moving their feet (not to mention asses). No surprise, considering their ability to mine New Zealand’s rich history of doom, gloom, and weirdness, update it, and mix it with the best of their international contemporaries. With lyrics that are hard to fault (“give me models, give me money”, anyone?), the various elements gel together into an unlikely catchiness that is quickly developing a strong following.

First making a dent on the radio airwaves was Girl, also released as their first single (on 7” vinyl and sold out), followed quickly by Models, which topped the national alternative radio charts in early 2004. Dead, newly released to the b.net, has matched the success of Models, topping the alternative chart again almost immediately. The Fanatics have also found favour with a group even harder to please than radio programmers, the public, topping listener-voted b.Net radio charts around New Zealand.

Recognition is coming quickly, The Fanatics were nominated in several categories at the 2004 b.Net NZ Music Awards: Most Promising New Act, Best NZ Remix (the Antix remix of Girl) and Best Unreleased Song (Models). The Fanatics were also invited to perform at these awards and enthralled the audience with their chaotic, high-energy show.

"The Fanatics are bouncing off the walls in a mad frenzy, Ian Curtis style . . ." - Ian 'Blink' Jorgenson, A Low Hum, April 2004.

" . . . their instrumentals could crack granite, and their live show (packing a genius re-cut of Snapper's 'Buddy') displays enough gall and raw belief to deflect the doubters" - Duncan Grieve, Real Groove, May 2004.

"The Fanatics - a rocking two-piece with no drummer and no need for a drummer. Uncharted is of the belief that The Fanatics is one of the most exciting things currently on the music scene." - Robyn Rockgirl, Uncharted 568 (weekly NZ Music News) June 2004

Tom has also performed with Fang.

RE: The Fanatics DESTORY the Big Day Out!

It was weird in the fact it was our first daytime gig!

Easily solved with very dark sunglasses and token goth fans smoking alot in close proximity.

Hope the Aussie gigs are going well. And that there have been no major encounters with the bitey WILD life.

As for the animals however.....

The Fanatics kill ATOMIC PHARMACY - Indigo NYE!!!
Posted: Thu Dec 16, 2004 4:56 pm
2 DJs, 1 band, 10 hours, 1 place to be on New Year’s Eve

DJ's Bill E & Cling have been playing records around Wellington under the nothingelseon moniker for over 10 years. The faces behind the long running new wave/synth pop/80s night ATOMIC (est.1996), and the Madchester/Britpop night 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE (2003), they have also given us numerous other one-offs and semi-regular gigs such as: BUMP! (Funk), Luxuria (Electroclash), 1977(Punk), and Indie Night.

This NYE the boys have rolled the best of all their nights into a “cure-all” they call ATOMIC PHARMACY. From 8pm, through to 6am, Indigo will be providing the best alternative for a New Year in Wellington.

Drawing from everything from the latest indie, to glam, new wave, Madchester, Britpop, 80s synth pop and more, ATOMIC PHARMACY will bring you music from the likes of: Franz Ferdinand, Stone Roses, Madonna, New Order, Pixies, Bowie, Libertines, Strokes, Datsuns, Beastie Boys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Happy Mondays, Duran Duran, Smiths, De La Soul and much much more.

Capitalrecordings artists THE FANATICS (Auckland) will also be there to ring in the New Year with their explosive live show. This two-piece has followed proudly in the footsteps of un-likeminded duos Simon & Garfunkel and Lee & Nancy, captivating listeners the length of the country over the past year.

(That was ripped straight from our bio, obvs!)

At only $15, this is surely one of the best bang-to-buck ratios around. If you’ve been to one of their gigs before, you’ll know the mayhem that ensues.

Coupled with an expanded lighting rig, and a bigger dance floor, Indigo will be truly rocking to bring in 2005.

The Fanatics EP out today!!!
Posted: Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:24 am
The Fanatics are proud to announce the release of our first self-titled EP on Monday, November 22 through Capitalrecordings.

Tracklisting:
TV (3:22)
Dead (2:59)
Models (3:42)
Calling (4:05)
Buddy (2:52)
Girl (4:50)
Signal (1:56)

Sound recording and mixing for the EP by our good friend Dale Cotton at audioworkshop and Platform Studios between September 2003 and September 2004.

All songs written by T. Clark and D. Green, except the classic Snapper song, Buddy, written by Peter Gutteridge. You can find the original version on their self-titled 1988 release through Flying Nun (FN110). We thoroughly recommend this record!

The singles Girl, Models and Dead have been long standing favourites on the b-Net stations and between them have achieved eleven number ones on 95bFM in Auckland, Radio Active in Wellington, Radio One in Dunedin and Radio Control in Palmerston North.
- Models reached number 1 on the Radioscope Alternative charts and was in the top 10 for 8 weeks.
- Dead reached number 1 on the Alt charts and was in the top 10 for 8 weeks.
- Girl reached number 14 on the Alt Charts and was in the top 30 for 5 weeks.

Buddy has recently been released to radio and should be heard on the b-Net stations and Channel Z over the coming weeks.

The video for Signal, (available for download on www.thefanatics.co.nz), was created by mad genius Simon Ward for the grand total of $40 and has had airplay on C4. Thanks to some financial help from NZ on Air, we are now in pre-production for the videos for Models and TV, which will be directed by Sticky Pictures' Mark Albiston.

The Fanatics EP is available at all good record stores from November 22, or you can click through to www.smokecds.com/cd/36515 and purchase it online now!

Oh, and there's now a guestbook. We'd like to encourage you all to write your rude and nasty comments. Of course, you should also sign up to our mailing list so that we can slag you back (and keep you in the loop of what we're up to).

The Fanatics sign with Capitalrecordings
Posted: Thu Sep 23, 2004 8:17 pm
Auckland electro rockers The Fanatics have signed with Wellington indie label Captialrecordings. The band are currently working on the finishing touches of their first 'mini album' due for release in October (available on CD and vinyl, so we're told), and a video is in pre-production for their track 'Models', courtesy of some helpful NZ On Air funding money.
