Stylus 'GAIN CONTROL'
Posted: Tue May 16, 2006 8:33 pm
ALBUM RELEASED 10th JUNE 2006 ON WILDSIDE RECORDS

Stylus celebrate the release of their second album 'GAIN CONTROL’ at the Kings Arms Tavern on Saturday 10th June 2006 with guests - Redline and Mystery Liquid.

Nationwide tour dates to be announced soon.

Recorded at The Lab and York St Studios this self produced and engineered album has been eagerly awaited.

As a follow-up to Stylus’ debut album ‘Painkillers’ (released in 2003) ‘GAIN CONTROL’ has something for everyone. Expected to be the break-through album of 2006 ‘GAIN CONTROL’ has 17 tracks of catchy melodies, low-riding grooves and crunching guitars; this album is why your stereo comes with a repeat function!

The first radio single from this album ‘I Was Alone Until Tonight’ was released in March 2006 and is accompanied by a high octane video with hot cars and burnouts directed by award winning director Adam Jones of Zoomslide Productions.

Paul Matthews and Dave Rhodes need no introduction, as award winning producers and engineers they have worked with many New Zealand artists including Blindspott, Opshop, Foamy Ed, Redline, Crumb and Tadpole. As the rhythm section of Stylus they have brought all their expertise into play to create ‘GAIN CONTROL’.

Guitarist Aja Timu’s influence on this album is clearly heard, with melodic, crunching riffs illuminating the tracks and savagely intense backup vocals giving this album a moodier tone than Stylus’ previous release.

Matt Samuels’ unique vocal quality will be familiar with Stylus fans and he has stepped up another level on this album, with ‘GAIN CONTROL’ capturing his extreme & passionate live performance energy, alongside more reflective, soulful moments.

The proficient but dirty stylings of Paul Matthews on bass, create a throwback funk low end which pounds out the rhythm section alongside the huge drums of Dave Rhodes.

Preorder your copy of ‘GAIN CONTROL’ now from all good record stores and look out for Stylus as they gain control of New Zealand - July 2006.

Guv'nors is on Rangitikei St opposite the National Bank.

It's R18 because Guv'nors is a bar, which has a liquor license and therefore can't admit people under the age of 18.

Perhaps you should ask the other band. STYLUS have been using the name since about 1998 and I'm told stylus77 new that when they chose to use the name.

Yeah the album is very good. I highly recommend it.

You don't hear stylus until you've heard the whole album.

Don't be fooled by incorrect advertising around the North Isand. The ONLY gigs Stylus are doing this summer are at Resolution04 and at the Whangamata hotel. Any other gigs you see advertised as Stylus are infact a band from Wellington with a similar name, not Stylus.

Stylus, A Crossbow & The Armed Offenders Squad
Posted: Tue Sep 9, 2003 8:12 am
Thanks to Wildside for the following...

Stylus started the week with a harrowing 24 hours. On Monday morning they arrived at their Grey Lynn practise room where they are recording their debut album, to find their recording gear trashed.

When bassist Paul Matthews (producer of the Blindspott album) approached a fellow tenant about the incident, later that day, Paul was alledgedly threatened with a crossbow. "He started to chase me with a crossbow," Matthews told Nightline.

Matthews and fellow band member Dave Rhodes locked themselves in the band room and called the police. The other tenant barricaded himself into his room. Paul, Dave and several other tenants then exited the premises before the Police arrived.

After a four hour stand off and repeated requests to come out, tear gas was fired into the unit by the Armed Offenders Squad. A dog was then used to apprehend the man, causing injury. The man, who has since been identified as 1970s Formula 5000 driver Graham McRae, was taken by ambulance to Middlemore hospital. A crossbow was removed from the industrial unit.

Has life immitated art? The scene of the incident was used in the band's new video 'Sick Of This' as an old-fashioned "insane asylum" set.

The good news is that the Stylus computer hard drive survived the trashing and the band's digital recordings are intact.
