Supervillains (RMC)

Bio

Powered by an explosive blend of classic hip-hop & criminally insane theatrics, SuperVillians (RMC) are a covert collective of cloaked craftsmen who have been taking the New Zealand music scene hostage since 2011.

This enigmatic crew of mic prodigies and turntable terrorists came to life in Grey Lynn, Auckland last year and consists of Fred Bishop (aka Fred Bish), Eden Jouavel (aka Dr Black), Manu Walters (aka Dirty Quarters), Piata Turei (aka The Sweaty Tooth Madman) and Liam Bree (aka Debris the stitched mouth). A hip-hop collective with a taste for the bizarre and a tendency to become dangerously unhinged onstage, SuperVillians are unlike anything the scene has ever experienced before.

The group’s cohesive blend of old-school rhythms, grinding loops, lyrical wizardry and frenetic on-stage antics provides an overpowering assault on the senses. With a sound which is firmly rooted in the classic hip-hop of the late 80’s and early 90’s – seamlessly fusing sampled funk and soul elements with dynamic beats and a ferocious verbal barrage – these hip-hop misfits have created an entirely organic, original and visceral sound.

Notorious for their frenzied on-stage antics, the most powerful weapon in SuperVillains’ extensive arsenal is their epic live shows. Taking the concept of the live gig to dizzying new heights of audience interaction and pure uncut entertainment, each member of the band transforms into their sinister alter-ego for every live performance. The schizophrenic mayhem that follows, as these denizens of the darkness expertly weave dirty riffs, ricocheting rhythms and verbal kung-fu into a corrosive whole, has to be seen (and heard) to be believed. It is this compelling combination of rap and theatrics which has been the secret to the success thus far of these silver-tongued anti-heroes.

SuperVillains have performed with GZA from Wu Tang Clan, The Pharcyde, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and played alongside leading Kiwi artists such as King Kapisi, Che Fu, Home Brew, The Heavy Metal Ninjas and Six60, as well as performing a blazing set for a captivated audience at 2011-12 Rhythm and Vines festival.
