Greg Fleming

Bio

Greg Fleming is a singer/songwriter based in Auckland New Zealand.

He performs live with his band The Trains. Often cited as being a pioneer of ‘alt.country’ rock in New Zealand, over a decade before the genre developed the ‘cred’ it now has, Greg stands apart with an extensive and timeless body of work.

Throughout the 1990s Greg was a prominent presence in the Auckland music scene both as a solo performer and with his band. Among its various line-ups The Trains included Mark Petersen (Jan Hellriegel, Straitjacket Fits), Stuart Broughton, Nick Kreisler (the Pet Rocks), John Segovia (Shaft, The Axlegrinders, Boxcar Guitars, Don McGlashan & The Seven Sisters), Dom Blaazer (SJD, Smoothy, The HitList, Don McGlashan & The Seven Sisters), Ricky McShane (Chainsaw Masochist, White Swan Black Swan), Cameron Miller (Mike Scott — Waterboys), and Andrew B. White (Bic Runga, Donald Reid, Damien Binder). Along with their own live shows The Trains shared the stage with local acts as diverse as the Renderers, Hallelujah Picassos, Shaft and Straitjacket Fits. Greg also opened up for international artists such as Townes Van Zandt, Paul Kelly, and Heather Nova, and for Bryan Adams (with The Trains).

In 1993 Greg and The Trains released the album 'Ghosts Are White' on Kane Massey’s Deepgrooves imprint Lost, via Festival Records. The single 'Ghosts Are White' was accompanied by a video by Jonathon King (Black Sheep, Under The Mountain), King’s first ever music video. In 1994 a version of the album track 'Codeine Road' was reworked by Grace’s Anthony Ioasa and released as a single with a NZ Music Award-nominated video shot on Auckland’s Karangahape Road, directed by Bruce Sheridan.

In addition to songwriting, Greg is also an accomplished writer, having twice been a finalist in the Sunday Star Times Short Story Awards and with stories and poetry published in Metro and Landfall.

In June 2010 Greg released the album 'Taken' to critical acclaim — a collection of songs recorded between 1994 and 2003. The album's 11 tracks feature the talents of Wayne Bell (drums and production), Andrew Thorne (guitars), Tony Lumsden and Mark Hughes (bass), Dom Blaazer (Hammond), Anthony Ioasa (piano) and vocal contributions from Boh Runga, Ted Brown, Callie Blood and Kate Stalker. The album was mastered by Dale Cotton (HDU, Dimmer, Knives At Noon). Taken comes as a two CD set with 24 pages of extensive liner notes and photos. The second disc contains a remastered version of Fleming’s 1993 debut album with The Trains, 'Ghosts Are White' which includes 11 bonus tracks.
