Hannah Curwood

Bio

“a voice as naturally effortless as her charm” – Rob Milne, Dunedinmusic.com.

“one of the most beautiful singing voices to emerge from these shores” -Tim Broadbent – Satellite Magazine.

2007 is the year that Hannah Curwood will make her welcome appearance on the NZ musical map. Hailing from the stark central Otago landscape, Hannah’s finely crafted songs reflect both her rural upbringing and her more recent years in the grey streets of Dunedin.

Hannah’s debut album 'Sky Above Horse Below', produced by Hannah with the help of Graeme Downes, was mixed and mastered at Audioworkshop by Dale Cotton (Conray, HDU, Dimmer, Paul McClaney, Die! Die! Die!). Featuring 11 tracks, Hannah explores a range of sounds, from guitar driven indie rock to shuffling alt country, from loud drums and abrasive bass to soaring walls of delicate strings.

Her floating vocals are evocative of the blue skies and deep lakes in her hometown of Wanaka, or to be more precise, Luggate, which you’ll need an extremely detailed map to locate. Referred to by the locals as Luggatè, Hannah has used this in-joke to create her very own record label, Luggatè Records. She is possibly the only person in New Zealand who finds this funny.

An accomplished multi-instrumentalist and astounding live performer, Hannah has played alongside talents such as Nina Nastasia, Jim White, Paul McLaney and Graeme Downes. Music aficionados had their first taste of Hannah’s voice as a backing vocalist on Paul McLaney’s 2006 album 'Edin'.

Following the release of 'Sky Above Horse Below' in April 2007 Hannah has been a very busy girl, with a move to Auckland and 2 tours already under her belt and at least 2 more NZ wide tours planned for 2007. 'Sky Above Horse Below' has received favourable reviews and extensive airplay on National Radio and B-nets around the country, with several tracks featuring on various B-net charts. Hannah has appeared on TV One News and Alt TV and performed live-to-air numerous times with different radio stations. With an appearance on the Good Morning Show and a steady amount of live shows planned, Hannah Curwood is well on her way to becoming an integral part of the NZ music scene.

“refreshing honesty, coupled with defiant, insolent intelligence” - Daniel Copeland – Gyro Magazine.

“beautiful melodies, catchy choruses and intimate themes” -Dunedinmusic.com.
