Orienteer

Bio

If Auckland semi-acoustic trio Orienteer never get a record deal, a single in the charts or a high-profile gig, they’ll be OK with that. As long as they’re making the best music they can and engaging people with something of substance, they’ll be happy.

Having previously played in a rock band together, Gary Martin, Bill Sim and Chris Lovie-Tyler are venturing into new territory with Orienteer; they’ve turned the volume down in favour of a subtler, more organic approach.

“We’re going for clarity and nuance, for a different kind of impact. We want people to feel something, to actually hear the lyrics and be able to appreciate the playing, and this format really lends itself to that.”

With individual influences as diverse as jazz, death metal and 80s pop, you’d wonder how these three guys ever came together. But that’s part of what excites them, the potential for something original to emerge from their combined differences.

All Christians, their songs unashamedly explore life from a faith perspective.

“We want to have a message, to give people something more than just entertainment. But we also want people to enjoy the music and think for themselves, so we try and write in a way that encourages that.”
