S.M.A.K.

Bio

SMAK was formed in 1991 in a bid to form the greatest rock band on the planet. Taking inspiration from The Stooges, The VU, Ted Nugent and local nutters the Psychodaizies among many others, SMAK were a part of the scene based at Auckland's infamous Frisbee studios.

Initially erratic booze and dope-fuelled live shows nevertheless betrayed some hint of talent and with dogged perserverance the band's following grew. Appearances on TV3's childrens' Saturday morning TV show YAHOO and a national tour in support of Dead Moon in 1992 were just a couple of highlights.

The band's debut album was released in December 1991. While greeted with good reviews in the mnusic press, commercial indifference to the product and a lack of radio airplay kept this Kiwi punk classic off the charts. That said it's a classic party album which is worth checking out if you can get your hands on a copy.

The band were also banned for life from Catcus Jacks in Auckland's Finance Plaza for trashing the place after losing a round of their Battle of the Bands.

With an albums worth of strong material in their live set and improving performances, Sauce made a questionable decision to take his OE trip in 1993. With this in the offing the band disintegrated, with Kenman doing a midnight flit to Timaru in his Skoda.

Quickly stick man Tonto O'Reilly was recurited and the band recorded their follow-up album, variously titled " Naked Children in the Fields of Love" or " Dark Side of the Poon" depending on who you're talking to.

The point is moot as this gem remains firmly in the Frisbee vaults...maybe one day you will hear it.

Where were you in 1992?
