Amiria Grenell - Gig Review: Amiria Grenell @ Space Academy, Christchurch - 10/05/2024

12 May 2024 // A review by Deprivacy

Amiria Grenell is a name synonymous with Folk music here in New Zealand. With a series of beautiful albums under her belt, Christchurch locals were treated to an incredible live performance which celebrated Amiria's fourth album The Winter Light, and her new single The Ghost In You.

Set at Christchurch venue Space Academy, Amiria and her band, performed flawlessly to a sold-out crowd. With all reviews I do, I spend time checking out the music the week before the show, so I knew what to expect musically, and I was blown away!

Starting the night was Amy Grace, a Christchurch local with plenty of talent, stage presence, and a voice that rung throughout the venue, I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and taking in the work of a new musician (to me). Amy is a great demonstration of the abundance of talent Christchurch has. The first thing I noticed was her incredible voice, it was such a delight to hear, and it made her set a very soothing and
easy to watch experience. She’s definitely someone to check out!

Next up was Amiria Grenell with her full band, and they did not disappoint! The highlight of the night was hearing such incredible vocalists in such a great setting.

A favourite moment of mine was getting to witness her new single Ghost In You played live. Not only did it allow me to experience the song, but I could feel every instrument and every note which made the song very memorable. Ghost In You, is bound to be a favourite in my household

As a person who is new to Folk music, I was taken back, It’s such a clean style of music and it really allowed for Amiria’s beautiful voice to really shine through. When mixed with the great sound, lighting and crowd, it made for a very entertaining and music filled night.

For those of you still yet to check out Amiria Grenell, and Amy Grace, I thoroughly
recommend that you do! It’s easy listening, greatly written and when played in a live
setting before your eyes, it’s an experience all on its own!
