Vox Capacitor - Single Review: Rectangle

18 Mar 2023 // A review by Peter K Malthus

Vox Capacitor is a solo project of "Jangly Dad Rock and Indie Guitar Pop" based in Auckland, from an artist who is clearly a quite competent multi-instrumentalist. From drums tracked "in a borrowed gym", to a suitably solid bass line, to layers of guitars topped with well-delivered vocals, Vox Capacitor certainly multi tasks with aplomb.

Multi-tasking being one of the lyrical refrains of Rectangle, the overall theme being one of "a life lived over Zoom" and feeling constrained by a "technological leash 24/7". The lyrics speak of feeling diminished by the technology we communicate with every day, being a "small version of me, relegated to a corner". A rather bleak message, but delivered with a lush and upbeat soundtrack.

I especially enjoyed the contrast in the guitar lines, ranging from sweetly clean little arpeggios floating around each other in the verses, to more driven low growls, supporting the message of the chorus. Whilst I enjoyed the vocals, especially the layers of harmonies at various points, I would have liked to have heard them just slightly higher in the mix.

Rectangle features on the upcoming Variance EP, with a full album planned for later in 2023. I would most closely compare this to "Unit"-era Regurgitator, so if that's your jam (like it is mine), get amongst it.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Vox Capacitor

Vox Capacitor is a one man jangly dad rock and indie guitar pop explosion from Auckland, New Zealand. Forged in the fires of COVID, everything you hear - vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keys and percussion, as well as the production, engineering and mixing is the product of a single mind. After entering the musical fray with the Hindsight EP last year, 2023 starts off with a bang on Feb 24 with the first song Rectangle from the upcoming Variance EP, to be followed by a full album later in the year!

Spirit Boy - Single Review: Neon Sky
24 Mar 2023 // by Peter K Malthus
I dragged my feet over this review, seriously let it get overdue, even. I haven't long been doing the reviewing thing here, so I wanted to be really sure about what I wanted to say, with this particular one.

Grant Duncan - Single/Video Review: Initiate
23 Mar 2023 // by Peter K Malthus
Grant Duncan already has an impressive back catalogue of releases on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, YouTube, and Spotify. The Auckland-based singer/songwriter has also spent time fronting the Tokyo-based indie combo Pavement Candy, and the influence of his travels is worn proudly heart-on-sleeve in Initiate.

King Cass - Single/Video Review: Yea Yea
27 Feb 2023 // by Peter K Malthus
The newest track from King Cass, Yea Yea, immediately grabbed me, and kept me. Starting out with a simple instrumental hook, leading into the smooth vocal line of the chorus, and on into King Cass delivering his message.

Gig Review: Beachware @ Space Academy, Christchurch - 11/02/2023
12 Feb 2023 // by Peter K Malthus
Last night's Beachware show was my first visit to Space Academy, a smallish venue with a great atmosphere and mouth-watering food. An excellent setting for the two bands I had the pleasure of watching.

Michael Signal - EP Review: Solway
10 Feb 2023 // by Peter K Malthus
I'm really surprised that I hadn't heard of Michael Signal before reviewing this EP. This is far from being Michael's first release, and listening to it (repeatedly and joyfully, I might add) had me delving into his back catalogue, including a rip-snorting cover of Scorpions' Rock You Like A Hurricane.
