Midwave Breaks - EP Review: Mind Made Up

02 Feb 2023 // A review by Kerry MB

Since 2021, Midwave Breaks have been the talk of Kiwi music, going from strength to strength releasing two EP’s and a string of radio singles.

Now, to kick things off right in 2023, the duo have released their new 3 track EP- Mind Made Up.

But let’s back track a little. If you haven’t actually heard Midwave Breaks, are you living under a rock?

Let me enlighten you.

Midwave Breaks sounds like if Bruce Springsteen, Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder were just two people- but Kiwis, with summer as the only season. A multitude of beautiful lyricism, melody and immaculate execution is the result and pretty much sums up a lot of what us Kiwis love in music.

While duos in music are hardly a new thing- think Steely Dan, The Carpenters, Royal Blood, to name a few, it is still a big thing to find that kind of musicianship and it makes it a little more special when they knock it out of the park- hence some of the great duos in music history.

Mind Made Up is a slight detour from their past and current more commercial sound, in a way where you peel an onion only to find a deeper, richer layer.

These three tracks still have their signature alt rock gentle sway, but there is more pensiveness, a real deep dive into their inner thoughts that make it feel more intimate.

The opening track, Mind Made Up has a great intro. It’s almost haunting lyrically and musically it soars. I love the lyric, ..”‘You’re the best friend I know” giving the song vulnerability to it.

And truly that is what this EP is all about to my ears, a kind of intimate vulnerability with beautiful melody that gives you thought and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Pale Flag - EP Review: Imperium
29 Jan 2024 // by Kerry MB
With a lot of misconceptions about deathcore, it’d be easy to lump Pale Flag into “one of those bands” based on the sub-genre alone. Luckily, I love metal in the most extreme and Pale Flag just so happen to create deathcore of the finest, which makes it even better to enjoy.

Broke are a five-piece from Taranaki who love to jam and make great music together. What started out originally as a solo project by Hamish McDonald (lead guitar and vocals) and resulted in a self-written, recorded and produced debut album Momento Mori in 2021, eventually paved the way for the lads to make it official and start creating new music together.
