Enoch - Single/Video Review: Seasons

26 Dec 2022 // A review by River Tucker

Formed in 2017, Enoch is a five-piece metal band hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, who encapsulates everything that’s good about metal music. Well produced by Texas based Machine (Lamb of God, Clutch, Impending Doom), Seasons is Enoch’s fourth single and marks a refreshing step away from their nu metal roots.

This more developed sound is largely derived from the angelic quality of Lorraine Brodie’s voice, imparting an almost trance-like quality to the majority of this track. Nicely enhanced by lyrics that aren’t subliminal messages attempting to co-opt you into religion, Lorraine is instead singing about difficult subjects that generally affect everyone. Her ethereal style and ascension leading into an extremely catchy chorus, combined with dark pervasive riffing, are where this track excels.

The band's biggest assets on Seasons are the exceptional timing and key changes, along with a melodic breakdown and intensely death metal outro, which keeps the listener fully engaged.

Lead guitarist Michael Germon’s short but sweet solos and Jordan McLean’s gloriously detuned chords seamlessly interweave with John Brodie’s bass lines and Ross Curtain’s intricate but intense blast beats. The musical precision of the piece and beautiful soundscapes pay testament to the take-your-time-but-get-it-right philosophy.

Generating some good online interest and heavily featuring the musicians, the accompanying video, filmed by Whisko Creative, perfectly showcases this young Christian metal band. Excellent colour choices and overlays, interspersed with crystal clear close-ups of the musicians and their instruments, along with absolutely fantastic backdrops, makes the video really pop.

An original and polished performance, Seasons exhibits a maturing of musicianship far beyond Enoch’s years. 4/5

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Enoch

We are Enoch; an alternative metal band from Auckland. Our sound is a melting pot of detuned metal, African tribalism, and punk rock topped off with melodic and aggressive female vocals.

The interesting backgrounds of Enoch's members and our personal testimonies of wrecked lives saved by Christ, leaves its sound thick and heavy in spiritual impact.

Bad Schematics have hit the road running with a small tour and a couple of promo videos made in support of their debut EP, Keep Your Gods. It’s a rip-roaring release somewhat influenced by early 2000 American Emo rock, embellished with touches of Nu-Metal and high-energy Alt Rock, which delivers a sound they can proudly call all their own.

It was pretty balmy in Palmy last Saturday night at Castle 789, but the Summer heat didn’t deter people from wearing black, with nearly every major metal band represented on patches and T-shirts by a small but dedicated crowd of enthusiastic metalheads.Tribute band Meiniak kicked things off with an extended set of all the Pantera greats, nailing such crowd-pleasers as A New Level, 5 Minutes Alone, Drag The Waters and Walk.

All I Seek - Single Review: Envy
05 Aug 2022 // by River Tucker
More than just a progressive Metal band, All I Seek have coalesced many of the best Alt Metal styles around, including at times Melodic Death (with a slight Djent edge) into their rip-roaring third single, Envy. This massive four-minute track fills a gap in New Zealand’s current progressive Metal scene and the juxtaposition of the songs uplifting message, delivered during mid-winter, makes it a very well timed release.
