Goodcorz - Single Review: Too Many Times

This single marks a
return to original music for Corey Cross AKA Goodcorz for the first time in more than twenty
years, and here he has been joined by Anton Harris (drums), Phil Doublet (ukulele, steel guitar), and Greg Mannering (bass, backing vocals). It took me
a while to think who this reminded me of, but then it came to me, The
Peppercorns, a British band who released an album back in the 90’s (Brothers)
who had a very similar style. It contains elements of Americana and Country
combined with a singer/songwriter who has vocals with some wonderful gravel. While
the main approach is quite simplistic in its directness, there is a lot going
on with the steel and the ukulele to ensure there are plenty of touches which ensure
it repays repeated listening's. There are also some really nice bass flourishes,
but not too many, just enough to show a wonderful sense of melody.
The arrangement is geared to keep the vocals front and centre at all times, and rightly so as Corey comes across as a mix between Steve Earle and Jimmy Barnes. The short unaccompanied harmony vocal section is in just the right place, lifting the song after the bridge, and one can imagine the chorus being a singalong at gigs. Hopefully this is the first in a lot more music from Goodcorz

Now free from some of the shackles of everyday life and in a space where his creative freedom can run free he decided to extract some of his ideas fr and bring them to life. Influenced by so many different style and genres as a youngster it would be fair to say the music he is singing and writing now is a far cry from the Grunge rock styles he cut his teeth on and fell in love with in his 20's his tunes will have a bit of something in there for everyone and if not then that's ok too! This isn't a hunt for fame and fortune, simply a bloke putting his thoughts down and sharing his music.

When On Tick released their debut album, Nothing New, towards the end of 2021 they were already in a state of change as it was recorded as a trio of brothers Brendan (vocals and drums) and Aidan O'Loughlin (vocals, guitar) along with bassist Matt Hammond, who also produced it, but they had now brought in Matt Perry to play bass while Matt H had moved to lead guitar. In 2023 things have changed again as Matt H is now concentrating on Pale Flag, while Matt P is also not involved any longer, so it is back to just Brendan and Aidan.

Written by Wolves may not have released any new material in 2022, but everyone knew the boys were working on their next album, and if you were fortunate enough to see them play then you will have already heard Give 'Em Hell as they were using this track as the opening number. In many ways this encapsulates everything which is Written By Wolves in one song – if you want to know why so many of us keep raving about them, then this will demonstrate why.

Here we have the latest single from Anthony Coulter’s album Pilgrimage To the Sea, where he says he is not getting any younger, something I can really relate to given I am 60 in just a few months and certainly act a lot more than I used to. Mind you, I don’t think every day is the same, which is the same for Anthony who yearns to be younger.

BAkeR - EP Review: Eternal Now

Mike Baker has been involved in both the Australian and NZ music scenes since the Eighties, running the import/export operations for Australia’s Hot Records at one point, releasing an album himself as a member of Not Really Anything and also managing Glide. Last year he created his alter ego BAkeR and started recording this five-track EP, entitled Eternal Now, with Daniel Hewson (the son of the late Paul Hewson of Dragon).

I think from the cover that The Traditional Aliens inhabit a world which contains knitted female dwarves, although I could well be wrong. What World Will You Live In is both the debut and third album by the guys, who recently changed their name from Infinity following on from their 2017 self-titled debut and then 2020’s Icy Blue Planet.
