Weird Together - Single Review: Find Out
Weird Together’s latest release Find Out is an eclectic collaboration with Silver Scroll winners Lips. It’s an acidic, bright funk-house number, experimenting simultaneously with the fun and the familiar.
Find Out is cinematic. It’s led by whispery vocals from Lips’ Steph, whose whispery vocals are heavily layered for dramatic effect. Steph sings like a siren luring a sailor into the ocean, mysteriously calling, “don’t be scared, there’s a world awaiting for you”. Human sounds often erased from pop production, such as hissing and microphone pops, remain in the mix, compellingly separating Find Out from the pack by giving the fantastical lyrics an almost uncomfortably human quality. Each line is conversational and quirky, painting a picture of a surreal garden world where the boundaries of our real world never fully materialise.
Bustling percussion drives the track, fizzing and popping in a way which will soon be inevitably inspiring summer festival goers. Subtle background details, like watery sound effects and a compelling kalimba, craft a full, unique musical palette. Most notably, Find Out features a chunky bass groove that proves utterly irresistible.
For music lovers seeking something truly fresh in Kiwi music, Find Out is here to answer your call. After Weird Together’s almost four-year hiatus, the track is a bursting, bombastic return to the music scene. It’s unlike anything else out there, and that’s truly for the better.
About Weird Together
After years of mainy late night / early morning "yeah, let's make some music together, sounds like fun" - the boys finally did it, and after a particularly inspirational session with some old Ethiopian Jazz records Weird Together was born.
A couple of years passed - Dick became a cycling champ, and in-between the ADD and off gallivanting round the globe Nick got a bit sidetracked but toward the end of the of 2011 a pact was made, and they decided to go at it proper with the aim of launching a full live show. Teaming up with a wide range of different musical folk who come from all over the world the boys have been busy in the Red Bull Studio's recording Caribbean Steel Pan Orchestras, Burundian Drum Ensembles, Sudanese Vocalists and Ghanian Master Percussionists and that's just the beginning.
