Caitlin - EP Review: States
Here we have the
debut EP from young Christchurch-based indie-pop musician Caitlin (Caitlin
Bradley) who is currently studying at Ara Music Arts in the city. She took the songs
to Ryan Chin (Fisherman), and together with Will McGillivray (Goodwill), Thomas
Isbister, and Shaun Malloch they worked to capture her innocent vocals and
songs in a manner which brings together lots of different styles. She says she
has been heavily inspired by Julia
Jacklin, Faye Webster, and Spacey Jane, yet she also brings in dream pop
elements from the likes of Jazmine Mary while there are also hints of French
For Rabbits and some folk. The result is five songs which are quite different yet
linked, so while June has a more Latin feel, Let Me Down is more
Flying Nun.
The arrangements are key as they contain plenty of space, so her vocals feel supported but never overwhelmed and it is a collection which is mature and seems far beyond her years until one realises both her parents are full-time musicians. She was recommended to Ryan as he is experienced in multiple genres and it is obvious that they are very much on the same wavelength as he has mixed and produced this with care, allowing Caitlin to always be the focus of attention but still allowing her vocals to contain innocence and naivety. The use of wavering and distorted guitar in the background of Kitchen is inspired, as while Caitlin is at her most delicate in the front (this song, out of all of them, is the one which can be imagined as just being vocals and acoustic guitar), there is a lot going on in the background which provides depth and breadth without ever changing the focus.
Somehow, they have managed to produce an EP which feels commercial and radio-friendly without compromising on the original ideals, and the result is something which listeners can enjoy the very first time of playing and yet get more from it as it is lived with.

Inspired by indie-pop sensations Julia Jacklin, Faye Webster and the New Zealand breakthrough indie dream-pop band There’s a Tuesday, the songwriter has defined her unique sound in the genre. After having great success with her debut pop single We’re Starting a Fire (2019) receiving over 100k listens, Caitlin is prepping to define her space in the Indie-pop genre with a new EP coming out in August 2022. Produced and mixed by Ryan Fisherman, Hardly is the first single of many to come with exciting new music not far around the corner for this young songwriter.

Rain - Single Review: Love and War

Lost Vessels - Single Review: All This Time

I must admit I was not that impressed when I first saw Lost Vessels play at Crushfest, something they later admitted to me was the worst gig of their career, but since then they have improved in leaps and bounds. This has been noticed by others on the Auckland circuit as they are getting more opportunities with better support slots, and I was not at all surprised when they won the Ding Dong Lounge Battle Of The Bands in November last year.

Unwanted Subject - Single Review: Sons of Savages

I have caught Unwanted Subject in concert a few times over the last couple of years, and while they have been getting better each time I have seen them, I must admit that nothing prepared me for this, which right from the off is a monster. I have never heard them quite this is aggressive, nor as polished, and this multi-sectioned single sounds almost like a different band as they have pushed their metal roots to the max in this metalcore beast which sees them mixing and blending different genres to create something quite special.

Gig Review: Turkey The Bird @ The Ministry of Folk, Auckland - 27/05/2023

Back up to Auckland Guide Centre in Mount Eden tonight for my second consecutive gig (Sol suggested it was a turkey sandwich as I am at Vader tomorrow) to see Taranaki’s finest, Turkey The Bird at The Ministry of Folk. Before that we of course had Hoop, who are Al Baxter (vocals, guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin), Nick Edgar (vocals, guitar, ukulele, flute, harmonica), Emily Allen (violin, viola), Glenn Coldham (bass) while tonight Gary Hunt was filling in for drummer Rusty Knox.

This Silent Divide - Single Review: Beautiful Creature
