Moofish - Single/Video Review: Sparrow
A short while back I reviewed Ash
Tree Lament by MOoFiSh, and the first thing I said was that I had no idea
how on earth I was going to be able to describe it, and now I have their latest
single I am wondering why on earth I volunteered as I have exactly the same
problem! There is just so much going on in this arrangement, from complex
layers to simplicity, that one really does not know where to start. When one realises
the music was written and recorded in two days, with Chris recording acoustic
guitar and drums, then bass, piano, and finally electric guitar and Rhonda writing
the words in just 15 minutes, then one can fully appreciate that they have been
partners for more than 30 years. The lyrics and music come together to create
something which is a world away from reality, getting us to relate to and think
of a sparrow, probably has a family, is free to fly, does not need a job, gets
its food and lodgings free, has no ego, and is literally a free spirit.
There are times when Rhonda’s vocals are single, others where they are multi-tracked, while Chris creates a tapestry of sound as he weaves the threads, with the electric noodling tying everything together. The video is a delight, with imagery created by StefWithAnF which has then been treated with Chris and Rhonda sometimes appearing in the background, with psychedelic images and styles over the top, with the video being as much a piece of art as the song itself, with the two combining together to create something which is psychedelic, pop, New Age, Kate Bush, beautiful, delicate and mesmerising.

So we have been around in different musical forms since the mid 80s, for Chris it started by moving to N.Z Tauranga in 82-83 after seeing Flying Nun bands via TV/radio in West Australia. Could not resist the music, it was a starting point, and has evolved musically from first Punk band Some Social Deviants, to Kiwi pop Three Men Missing (Bandcamp) still in 80's, they lasted until 88 with various members coming and going. Rhonda was a vocalist in 3MMissing when they met, we discovered we clicked besides the obvious ha, and began writing and recording on 4 track cassette tape as a duo, doing sporadic live work using the name Beat Angels. During 1991 hard edged rock seemed appealing so Chris joined up with a former 3MM member and formed Hula Troupe played lived then self destructed 95?, but not before 3 or so EPs? (Bandcamp)

On Tick - EP Review: Planet Chrome

When On Tick released their debut album, Nothing New, towards the end of 2021 they were already in a state of change as it was recorded as a trio of brothers Brendan (vocals and drums) and Aidan O'Loughlin (vocals, guitar) along with bassist Matt Hammond, who also produced it, but they had now brought in Matt Perry to play bass while Matt H had moved to lead guitar. In 2023 things have changed again as Matt H is now concentrating on Pale Flag, while Matt P is also not involved any longer, so it is back to just Brendan and Aidan.

Written By Wolves - Single Review: Give 'Em Hell

Written by Wolves may not have released any new material in 2022, but everyone knew the boys were working on their next album, and if you were fortunate enough to see them play then you will have already heard Give 'Em Hell as they were using this track as the opening number. BAkeR - EP Review: Eternal Now

Mike Baker has been involved in both the Australian and NZ music scenes since the Eighties, running the import/export operations for Australia’s Hot Records at one point, releasing an album himself as a member of Not Really Anything and also managing Glide. Last year he created his alter ego BAkeR and started recording this five-track EP, entitled Eternal Now, with Daniel Hewson (the son of the late Paul Hewson of Dragon).
