Wellington based singer songwriter Alba Rose has released her lush four track EP, Silhouette. A beautifully rich collection of soulful jazz, contemporary in its delivery incorporating an indie-pop and neo-soul sound wrapped around playful harmonious lyrics.
It was easy to become captivated by Silhouette, each track had a mesmerising quality. Eve, Butterfly Kisses, Holding On and Serendipity each wonderfully melodic and beautifully composed. Accompanying creative album cover artistry by Lily Sea Kelp abstractly shows the theme “that with the light there is always dark.”
Each of the tracks are equally smooth, however the standout for me was Serendipity, the relaxed soft vibe of balmy summer nights flow through the track, which creates a stunning finale to Silhouette.
Four tracks of warm velvety harmonious vocals backed with the full band sound has created a cohesive and moreish soundscape which leaves me hopeful for a full album sometime soon.
Since establishing her solo artistic identity in 2020, Rose has performed alongside contemporaries such as Muroki, Harper Finn, Mako Road and LA Woman and played to audiences across Aotearoa, including at Twisted Frequency, That Weekend and the 121 Festival.
Prior to becoming Alba Rose, she spent four years as the front woman for Corduroy. The band hit the NZ top 20 charts, played at the country’s largest festivals, Rhythm & Vines and Bay Dreams, as well as selling out shows on nationwide tours.
During this period of time Rose also featured across genres as a vocalist on hip-hop, liquid D&B, post-punk and trip-hop influenced tracks, with her song Breathe with producer CSM landing on the top 20 Liquid charts of 2020 and 2021.
