Aoturoa - Single/Video Review: Brothers Part I: Spirit
Aoturoa is a new project from Tom Scrase, one of
Aotearoa's leading drummers, who performs with the likes of dDub, Corrella and
in the percussion ensemble Strike! Percussion. Brothers Part I: Spirit is
taken from his debut album where it is combined with Brothers Part II: Earth
as one piece of music nearly 7 minutes in length but here it has been
reduced to 4. Tom produces music which he sees as working with other mediums
such as dance, installation, or films, and here he has a percussive base on top
of which there are multiple layers, but they are never dense, as there is
plenty of space between the different elements. He brings ambient and textural
soundscapes together with keyboards and multi-tracked vocals to take us on a
journey.
When this played with the video, as opposed to the music on its own, it feels far more structured and relevant, as if it now has a purpose. The images are of different landscapes, with the camera moving slowly through the scenes, and there really is a feeling that the images and the audio belong together and that they have been chosen in such a way that each reflects the other and together they are stronger than each is individually. The first time I played this I felt it more like an art installation than either music or film, and the more I have watched and listened to this stronger that feeling has become. The two forms belong together, with each being less if the other one is missing. Not quite New Age, here we have a song about humanity's relationship to the planet and the eternal, in a manner which is almost meditative in manner.

Creating sound design for dance, film and installation, this creative outlet sees elements of ambient, textural soundscapes blended with complex and hypnotic rhythms and field recordings. Dense and challenging, these sounds are manipulated while retaining the primal sense of connection that permeates Aoturoa's music.

So it was down to Tuning Fork for the first night of the second Crushfest festival. Tonight was going to be Wellington and Auckland bands, and then some of the same will be playing at the second night in Wellington next month.

Rain - Single Review: Love and War

Lost Vessels - Single Review: All This Time

I must admit I was not that impressed when I first saw Lost Vessels play at Crushfest, something they later admitted to me was the worst gig of their career, but since then they have improved in leaps and bounds. This has been noticed by others on the Auckland circuit as they are getting more opportunities with better support slots, and I was not at all surprised when they won the Ding Dong Lounge Battle Of The Bands in November last year.

Unwanted Subject - Single Review: Sons of Savages

I have caught Unwanted Subject in concert a few times over the last couple of years, and while they have been getting better each time I have seen them, I must admit that nothing prepared me for this, which right from the off is a monster. I have never heard them quite this is aggressive, nor as polished, and this multi-sectioned single sounds almost like a different band as they have pushed their metal roots to the max in this metalcore beast which sees them mixing and blending different genres to create something quite special.

Back up to Auckland Guide Centre in Mount Eden tonight for my second consecutive gig (Sol suggested it was a turkey sandwich as I am at Vader tomorrow) to see Taranaki’s finest, Turkey The Bird at The Ministry of Folk. Before that we of course had Hoop, who are Al Baxter (vocals, guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin), Nick Edgar (vocals, guitar, ukulele, flute, harmonica), Emily Allen (violin, viola), Glenn Coldham (bass) while tonight Gary Hunt was filling in for drummer Rusty Knox.

This Silent Divide - Single Review: Beautiful Creature

Here we have the latest single from Wellington-based melodic hard rock quartet This Silent Divide, entitled Beautiful Creature. I really enjoyed their Tall Stories EP, and they played a great gig at Dead Witch towards the end of last year, and this would have been recorded at about the same time.
