Alba Rose - Single Review: Eve

26 Aug 2021 // A review by Danica Bryant

The captivating hook of Alba Rose’s debut single, Eve, warns listeners of the likelihood that they will be “swept away”. It’s a truthful mission statement for a track which introduces Rose as a soloist, outside of her performances in Wellington band Corduroy. Eve bubbles within its slow tempo, jazzy instrumentation, and heartfelt story of self-acceptance.

Self-produced by Alba Rose, then mixed by Jim Macrae and mastered by Wellington’s PureSound Studios, Eve is a soulful indie number with wide appeal to Aotearoa music lovers. Rose’s clear, clean vocals carry the track. Her direct and honest lyrics seek to find a way to make use of her time, as she swears to “try and try again” in becoming her true self. In fact, the strength of this sung material leaves the listener craving even more, as Alba certainly has an incredible dynamic and tonal range to work with.

Beautiful instrumentation such as sweeping keys, which roll back and forth in breath-taking fashion, as well as simple, booming bass lines, give the track a constant sense of easy motion and full production. The dreamy artwork also deserves special mention, as its idyllic colour scheme and imagery radiates the soft, angelic energies of the track itself.

With a unique blend of genres, Eve metaphorically unveils Alba Rose as an incredibly promising performer, setting her on the path for what is sure to be an exciting musical journey ahead.
