Something Zesty - Single/Video Review: Fishtank

27 Jul 2021 // A review by Lou Clement

Something Zesty have launched their new video for Fishtank, their latest single which was released earlier this year. The track itself is catchy with warm electric guitar chords framing the laidback lyrics -  dare I say it – it’s refreshing. It is a musical saunter through the lives and happenings of everyday folk.

The video is a fourth-wall-breaking mix of illustration and montages, taking place mainly in suburban New Zealand. Filmed and edited by Josh Dey, it opens with an ordinary conversation between band members as they consider the work it takes in order to make something like this video and whether they have the capacity. The theatricality is fun and not overdone, with an ever so slightly surreal dream like sequence as the track begins.

We follow two large cardboard-headed characters around as they enact scenes from the lyrical story, including going for a bike ride and pouring drinks. The former scene is accompanied by subtitles.

Again, it’s full of the fun, lightness and colourful branding of this band’s previous endeavours, no doubt inspired by widely admired adult sci-fi animation, it’s a joy to watch. I’m a particular fan of the purple one, t-shirt, please?

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Something Zesty

Something Zesty is the imaginative and energetic cartoon-musical adventure created by Isaac Chamberlain in his bedroom studio in Whanganui. Making full use of Isaac's knack for illustration and galaxy bending musical creation, Something Zesty follows the adventures of 'chambzy' and his partner-in-funk 'Zestro' as they explore the galaxy of music searching for planet Zest. From the valleys of Mars sculpted by punk rock to the laser beamed anthems of the beep pop techno dimension, Something Zesty is Isaac's mission to add free flowing funk to a chaotic world. All zest no stress!

Single Review: Cherry Blind
16 Dec 2020 // by Lou Clement
Cherry Blind's new single; a pace, energy and a dash of screamo. I recently attended a punk-weekender: two days of what seemed like seven minute sets, where there were really only fans and no bystanders and bands that moved from one song to the next as quickly as the flip of a pancake.
