Alice Tozer - Single Review: Pink & Blue

05 May 2021 // A review by madeleinehoward
Christchurch pop artist Alice Tozer released their debut single Pink & Blue on the 26th of April. A groove tinged, jazz infused tune about gender identity, the track is a strong introduction to this brand new artist.

Pink & Blue begins with soft, pretty guitar chords, slowly building up to the first verse. A groovy guitar lick accompanies the thought provoking lyrics, with the beat coming in half way through the first verse. Leaning into a catchy sing along chorus, with sweet harmonies an octave above the melody, this self-produced track shows off Alice’s smooth vocals and impressive talent for lyric writing.

The chorus is followed by a slick, John Mayer inspired guitar solo, before heading into a stripped back, lo-fi second verse. The second chorus is followed by an acoustic guitar accompanied bridge, before one final chorus with different, uplifting lyrics. The track is well produced and will make the listener feel like they are receiving a warm, comforting hug after a long day.

Pink & Blue is a wonderful introduction to Alice, showcasing their talent for writing memorable hooks, but also brave and heart felt lyrics. The message of struggling to fit into society’s expectations around gender, followed by the hopeful conclusion that you can, in fact, find the place that you belong, is an important one that will resonate with a lot of people. I hope that this beautiful track gets to be heard by those who need it the most.

With more music promised, Alice Tozer is an artist that you should definitely be on the look out for.
