Dr.Reknaw - Single Review: Bassline Meditation

14 Dec 2020 // A review by IslaMusic

Dr.Reknaw is a psychedelic super group with roots in soul, hip-hop and dub. This eclectic eight piece began as a duo of sisters, and has since grown into an "empowering groove machine". Dr.Reknaw writes music that celebrates connection to whenua and fellow humans.

The super group's latest offering is the laid back Bassline Meditation. It sets the tone with a groovy sax line, before moving into a summery rhythm section and clean electric sparkles. Bassist and songwriter Sophie Cooper starts with the sweet nothing "you make me crinkle up my face".

Bassline Meditation is a "sentimental love song to the magical force that is music". Both the subject matter and sound are refreshing. The track captures the pure serenity that can only be composed by good music and old friends. Reminiscent of Pomplamoose and the more laid back side of Vulfpeck, Bassline Meditation is the perfect summer soundtrack.

The track comes hand in hand with the world's cutest music video shot at "a friend's birthday party". The entire cast looks like they're having the loveliest evening. It's a feel good anthem- the listener leaves feeling "better than they did five minutes ago". I can't wait to follow Dr.Reknaw's music, and will definitely be looking out for their next live show.

Imperial April - EP Review: An April Christmas

I was dubious at the thought of reviewing a Christmas album. It’s not often that modern holiday tracks dodge the danger of cheesy cheer and forced rhyme.
