Pinn Tweaks - Single Review: Tear The Walls Down

11 Nov 2020 // A review by samv1010

Drummer and producer Jason Peters is no stranger to the NZ Music Industry with a career spanning over 20 years. With a decorated catalogue that includes grunge Rock band; Pumpkinhead and funk/disco fusion Kong Fooey, he’s a man armed with experience and savvy.

Pinn Tweaks is Peter’s new musical endeavour. A hip-hop alias with an upcoming tour. He’s recently released Tear the Walls Down in collaboration with emcee Dilz and NZ RnB icon, J Williams. This track reminds me of my youth, with a strong resemblance in the production to Keri Hilson’s 2009 hit Knocks You Down. Carried by 2010’s RnB/Hip Hop Brass VST, rattling high hats and SFX sweeps, they lay the foundation for a sound which is sonically dated but nevertheless showcases some triumphant punch, although the vocals could sit a little higher in the mix.

Dilz delivers a passionate and emotional performance which reflects the cadence and lyricism which has seen him build a cult following in small-town NZ. His sound is authentic Kiwi and his hook actually reminds me of Jay Rock minus the profanity lol. He’s got a strong sense of self in his performance; however, I was left a little uninspired by the themes, flows and messaging in his lyricism. Conceptually, they felt dated.

J Williams still possesses the vocal talent that distinguished himself as one of NZ’s premier vocal talents in the late 2000’s. He’s another man who was the soundtrack of my childhood. I remember watching him at Pasifika 2009 and being mesmerised by his performance schools. These skills are evident in Tear The Walls Down. His runs and riffs in the hook are evident showcasing of his prolific talent. His verse is well written and performed - in the mould of Ne-Yo (although it could have been mixed more cleanly). Although again, it’s not a refreshing sound. I’m excited to hear what he does next, there’s an undeniable talent with Williams that I'm excited to see grow and evolve.

Overall, this is a nice track. Pinn Tweaks (Peters) is a talented and experienced producer looking to dabble in new waters. I like the sound but it’s dated and the lyricism left me a little uninspired and wanting more (although the brass midi sound does call for triumphant lyricism… such as Trophies by Drake). However, each artist showcases the unique niche talents and cadences which makes them exciting NZ talents.

Valleyside Boys - EP Review: 3 Pack

I do enjoy collaborations - I’m a firm advocate for their power and ability to bring together different flavours, fan-bases and ultimately, different worlds. Valleyside Boys are one of these collectives, in an era which is seeing an increase in such collectives (YGB, 0800, BLKCITY, Y$O, YKK).
