The Response - Single Review: All Of My Flaws

24 Sep 2020 // A review by Paul Goddard

Smooth.

A word that sounds just as good as it looks. Siting in an unseasonably hot beer garden in the UK, this silky funked up tune is reverberating around my mind as I sip on a Purity Goose ale (UK Hipster), while not giving a shit about anyone else watching me sway from side-to-side with a smile on my face.

Maybe they all think I have gone mad, maybe I have overdosed on Vitamin D after 1 hour in the sun's rays. I don’t know and right now I am beyond caring.

Music should transport you. Take you from your surroundings. This is a short song, so I have it on loop; the guitars jag just enough to keep me from drifting too far, keeping the vibe choppy and trippy as the vocals ebb and flow. Those vocals engage instantly. This is a voice that doesn’t annoy, grind or grate it just fits.

I have lost count of the number of run throughs now. 30 mins in and I am still grinning and actually singing along.

The Response have me singing and dancing like no one is watching. The fact that lots of people are actually watching and I don’t care is a further testament that everything is as it should be

All Of My Flaws is pretty flawless - get your dose now.

About The Response

New Zealand Alternative Pop duo The Response blend electronic minimalism, pop sensibilities and the eclectic influences of vocalist/guitarist Andy Knopp and multi-instrumentalist Victoria Knopp to create what NZ Musician Magazine describes as "indie pop at its carefully crafted best." Their dynamic live show has allowed them to share the stage with such international acts as Baio (of Vampire Weekend fame), Deep Sea Diver (Seattle), Big Scary (Australia) and Kate Boy (Sweden), as well as play local festivals including Electric Avenue.

After two years based in Vancouver, Canada where apartment living and public transit inspired a more minimalistic and increasingly electronic shift in their sound and live set up, The Response made their way back to New Zealand where they have since released singles Holding Out For Something, Only In The Night and Practical, as well as EP's What Are You Waiting For? and Little Worlds. Described as “indie-proper”, the duo write, produce, record, mix and master all their own music, as well as design and artwork.

The Response are set to release their next album late in 2019, with feel-good alt pop gem 'Tallest Walls' out now.

Sitting here in a very wet and cold, rainy UK watching the oldies falling out of the local Wetherspoons where they have been on the piss since 9am (yep the UK is weird it's only the old people who can afford to get pissed all day).I am reflecting on the past as I listen to the latest EP Made Up from Auckland-based Mark Hannington.
