Club Classic - Single Review: Richie Whiskey

24 Sep 2020 // A review by IslaMusic
Club Classic are an energetic indie-funk band from Wellington looking to make their mark on the Aotearoa music scene by making people dance. Inspired by legends Parcels, Sticky Fingers and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the four piece specialise in dynamic and groovy jams.

Richie Whiskey is an energetic funk-rock track about 'that guy' causing trouble at a house party. The track features a powerful vocal performance from the lead singer as he describes Richie Whiskey’s antics. The use of chorus vocals yelling "giving it up and giving it up" evoke the feeling of a house party that’s going off. The moments of crossover between rap and funk make the track a lot of fun.

The rhythm section is groovy, utilising still, high chords layered on drums and funky bass to build an energetic soundscape. Richie Whiskey would be a lot of fun to listen to at a house party. It maintains its energy relentlessly, demanding that the audience stand up and move. The transition into a heavier drop half way through keeps the sound diverse, and a distorted guitar solo builds the anticipation for the final chorus.

Richie Whiskey is sure to be a riot of a live track, and lucky for us Club Classic are jumping on stage at Meow, Wellington alongside Pass The Peas and Androgynous Lemon on the 15th of October.

About Club Classic

Formed in late 2018 after having a crack at different genres of music, the draw of making music to dance to, led the Club Classic chaps to producing 70’s Funk, Soul and Disco inspired tunes to get your foot tapping, fingers drumming and head nodding.

Based in Wellington, the initial four piece of Liam - Drums, Cameron - Bass, Eddie - Guitar and Joe - Vocals and Keys, released Get Out Your Funk to the world. Followed quickly by The Vibe which consolidated their approach to dancey tunes, and gave a cool platform for Joe to express himself on stage. With live shows at Meow towards the end of 2019 things were looking good for the band…

Covid took the wind out of their sails a little but once they could meet together again mid-2020 they took off with gusto inventing Richie Whiskey. Richie is your true “man about town” drinking, dancing, enjoying the Club life. The four piece expanded to five with the addition of Troy on Keys, thus allowing Joe to focus on singing and working with the audience, making sure they all enjoyed the excellent Club Classic atmosphere.

I was dubious at the thought of reviewing a Christmas album. It’s not often that modern holiday tracks dodge the danger of cheesy cheer and forced rhyme.
