Dick Raine - EP Review: Dick Raine and Dick’s Guns

08 Sep 2020 // A review by Paul Goddard

Lockdowns are shit. A few months ago, we didn’t even know what a lockdown was nor social distancing and let’s face it the world is pretty fucked at the moment.

Some people have taken adversity and turned it into opportunity though and as a result of writer's block Dick Raine decided to get social in these anti-social times and invite some fellow musicians to bounce ideas off.

The result is Dick’s Guns. A four song EP that runs the gamut of Lo Fi punk n roll.

First up, The Black Remains with Adrian Drew, is a perfectly satisfactory piece of rock n roll that wouldn’t sound out of place on one of Josh Homme's Dessert Sessions recordings. It’s simple but delivered with a large dose of effortless cool.

The State Of It with Gareth Scott settles into a spaced out surf style groove, not unlike The Pixies, that quickly envelopes and is offset against engaging and intelligent lyrics delivered with just the right amount of chutzpah.

Next up is Time is Ticking. Fleur Wood sounds like a tripped out Suzy Quattro (look her up), while hubby Wesley Wood perfectly complements this rock a billy tinged slice of badness. This track also features Gareth Scott.

Finally, we have the blistering How F**ked is This Sh*t?, featuring Matt Billington and David Hine. A full on howling blast of attitude and angst. A full time band should be formed based on this one track alone.

With Dick’s Guns, Richard Raines has taken a gamble that has paid off. The collaboration has resulted in four very distinct and different songs that can stand on their own.

Lockdowns are shit. Life is shit right now but if you want 13 mins to take yourself away from the doom and gloom then check out Dick’s Guns. It is as catchy as COVID so take off your masks and breathe this one in.

You will feel better for it.

Sitting here in a very wet and cold, rainy UK watching the oldies falling out of the local Wetherspoons where they have been on the piss since 9am (yep the UK is weird it's only the old people who can afford to get pissed all day).I am reflecting on the past as I listen to the latest EP Made Up from Auckland-based Mark Hannington.
