NEEKOH - Single Review: Falling

15 Aug 2020 // A review by Mike Alexander

It’s a delightful rarity to have a Finnish pop idol move to New Zealand and re-boot what was once a burgeoning career in his home land.

That’s the back story of NEEKOH, a Finland Pop Idol finalist in 2014, and Falling, his second New Zealand single from the soon to be released EP Dark Light. Falling is a darkly enchanting “cosmic” love song with a big pulsing heart, a grand electronic sweep and oddly entrancing robotic vocal that suggests disassociation but sweeps you up in a whirlwind of emotions.

I love this kind of disparity – robotic, as in going through the motions, and conscious and considerate, as in going through the emotions.

Despite its powerful electronic overlays, Falling is raw to the core. Welcome to our little corner of the world NEEKOH. I think you are going to make quite the impression.

About NEEKOH

Prior moving to New Zealand in 2016, the Finnish artist NEEKOH, one-name performance moniker of Niko Helenius, released his debut single Bigger Better Stronger Faster in English and Finnish with music videos for both versions at the same time. Both music videos was shot in Los Angeles, US and was directed by Hector Abaunza, who has worked with Grammy nominated artists like James T. Slater.

A divorce from a relationship of 12 years urged NEEKOH to take a break of his celebrity status in Finland to re-create himself. The conclusion of the hiatus was that only way going forward is being brutally honest and personal in his songwriting. Meanwhile, falling in love encouraged him to move to the other side of the world. After moving to NZ, NEEKOH decided to write about the break-up and a new-found love. The upcoming EP Dark Light about love, sex and heartache is set to be released early 2021. He has come a long way musically as well as geographically since Finland's Pop Idol finalist 2014.

Naircol - Single Review: Turbo Outrun
04 Feb 2021 // by Mike Alexander
In an interview with Naircol, following the release of his debut album Isolate late last year, he put collaborative ventures at the top of his wish list. It seems Santa Claus came calling in the form of Canadian producer Tokyo Rat, the result of which is the dynamic driving anthem Turbo Outrun.

Claire Cowan - Composition Review: Hansel and Gretel
16 Dec 2020 // by Mike Alexander
The Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel is, ah, rather 'grim' to say the least. It’s the story of a brother and sister who get lost in the woods and are befriended by a cannibalistic witch who lives in a house made out of sweet things, most notably gingerbread.

Mahoney Harris - Single Review: The Shifting of the Light
19 Nov 2020 // by Mike Alexander
There's an evocative image conjured up early on in The Shifting of the Light that beautifully illustrates the underlying theme of letting go. In referring to "paradise ducks made for life returning to their bowers time after time" singer-songwriter Mahoney Harris might well be talking about 'soul-mates' or a similarly intimate relationship that felt as if it was meant to last but didn't.

Eden Iris - Single Review: I Just Can't Turn It Off
12 Nov 2020 // by Mike Alexander
Having exorcised a few ghosts, so to speak, on her soul stirring 2018 EP Demons, Eden Iris is finally set to release her debut album next year. It’s been an age since the now LA-based, singer-songwriter first came to national attention through Mike Chunn’s Play It Strange competition.

Feel-good grooves are part of Raw Collective’s DNA. The Wellington-based 10-piece have been sowing sunflower seeds of optimism and cheerfulness for many a year now and it seems the well of goodness never dries.

Naircol - Album Review: Isolate

Naircol is Tauranga-based synthesiser whizz Matt Hennessey. I like that it is an anagram of clarion because this is quite the impressive calling card.
