Darryl Baser - Single Review: Wood, I’ve Found You A Seeker

14 May 2020 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
Dunedin based musician and purveyor of the Dunedin Sound and indie folk genres Darryl Baser, has just released the first single from his up and coming sophomore album Second Selfie. Wood, I’ve Found You A Seeker is an unusually named release based on a “bunch of experiences”.

Proof that good things take time, Second Selfie has been a few years in the making and although not a prolific releaser of music, Darryl can be found playing around Dunedin regularly. Wood, I’ve Found You A Seeker was written in December 2019 and released on May 5 in the year 2020. As with his first album, artist Sarah Flourish adds her unique eye catching artistic flair to this release with the album art.

Like past musical ventures, this single has a distinctive sound. Reverberation of echoes in the background creating an interesting effect. Darryl’s vocals which I have described previously as reminiscent of Johnny Cash are deep and soothing and somehow spark nostalgia in the brain.

This is a trippy track partly due to the echoes of the vocals and partly because the of unique instrumentals. Darryl is joined by Stephen Hastle (drums) and Paul S Allen (guitars). Together they have created an interesting alternative sound.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Darryl Baser

He was made in England, born in Wellington, and grew up in Turanganui-a-kiwa (Gisborne).

Recent history - working on a follow up LP to 2016’s #RawSelfie which was recorded in 2013 on an LG Optima cell phone in a series of live takes in a St Kilda flat.
So far #SecondSelfie is being tracked on a lap top using audacity, where baser is recording layers of guitar, bass, percussion, voices, and in some cases found sound.
Right, here’s the older history.

10 Sep 2020 // by Corinne Rutherford
Auckland based Cantabrian, disillusioned architect and sausage roll enthusiast Harry Platt who goes under the pseudonym Hazza Making Noise, has just released a new single called Boomers In Disguise. Cross a football chant with a rock opera and inject it with punk-rave then you will have a fair idea about the unique concept which Harry describes as having "an early Arctic Monkeys – Brianstormesque nature to it".
