Thousand Limbs - EP Review: Mara

19 Apr 2020 // A review by Kerry MB

Thousand Limbs is an Auckland instrumental Metal/Doom quartet that formed in 2016.

Very quickly, you’ll find they take you on a journey without ever leaving the house, which is about as good as it gets in these trying times.

Mara is the name of their new three track EP, and it wastes no time in assaulting your senses with its heavy, crunchy riffs and foreboding tempo.

Everything about instrumental tracks makes you appreciate music a little more because it makes you really tune in and pay attention to the musicianship and what is being created. Thousand Limbs capture that perfectly with these three tracks and it almost makes you feel you are there watching them jam.

If you love a more even-paced head banging session with unbelievable energy then you need to crack into this EP. Let it take your mind somewhere new and also appreciate the flawless recording and engineering done by none other than Dave Rhodes at Depot Sound in Devonport.

Not only will you love every note of these tracks, especially its self-titled track, Mara, an explosion of good times, you’ll want to go ahead and press that play button a few more times too.

Oh, and the EP’s artwork is visually stunning. Ten out of ten from me.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )

Pale Flag - EP Review: Imperium

With a lot of misconceptions about deathcore, it’d be easy to lump Pale Flag into “one of those bands” based on the sub-genre alone. Luckily, I love metal in the most extreme and Pale Flag just so happen to create deathcore of the finest, which makes it even better to enjoy.

Broke are a five-piece from Taranaki who love to jam and make great music together. What started out originally as a solo project by Hamish McDonald (lead guitar and vocals) and resulted in a self-written, recorded and produced debut album Momento Mori in 2021, eventually paved the way for the lads to make it official and start creating new music together.
