Alders - Single Review: Lost In Your Colours

18 Apr 2020 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Alders, the solo project of Mitch Alderlieste, has just released his latest single Lost In Your Colours.

Mitch Alderlieste is an independent singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Wellington. Known for his soaring and husky vocals, Alders makes a mark on modern music with his versatility in music-making, taking inspiration from rock, pop, alternative, and indie genres. Alders has also recently embraced the world of production and has gifted us with this delightful autumnal track. The single is now streaming on all major platforms, with an impressively creative stop-motion music video; viewable here.

Lost In Your Colours opens with a 16th note acoustic rhythm with an off-beat accent, giving us a folky and catchy opening. The simplicity of the track pays homage to its own art form; the rhythm of the acoustic guitar is dexterous and kept throughout. A vibrant guitar solo creeps in at 1.57 seconds, then eases off, as the song’s vocal layers build expressively. As the tempo slows down, the song fades, and the snare brushes foster the rustling effect. Ending the tune, a musing little piano melody leaves us in contemplation.

This track is definitely crafty and well-rounded. Paying attention to the lyrics alone, there is a clever changing weather and love theme throughout. It’s very much a pick-me up track for rainy days, or for moods where you’d rather just be crunching leaves under your feet. The music video is clearly created at home, exposing creativity from its humble beginnings which can definitely be reached in isolation (fitting, given 2020’s global phenomenon). Discovery doesn’t always need a budget as “[our] mind is a wonder” on its own. The album artwork is also a multi-coloured sensation, like the whole track itself! You can also listen, download and/or purchase this single here.
