Antebellum - Album Review: Sovereignty

01 Apr 2020 // A review by Kerry Monaghan

Antebellum are a three piece, metal infused rock band from Tauranga.

This is their debut album, Sovereignty, and it’s clear they have a lot to say for a band with no vocalist (that we know of), but with no shortage of really cool riffs and insane talent.

From the opening prelude track, to the closer song, Principium, these ten tracks take you on a pretty cool journey, especially when you can appreciate the synchronicity of musicianship.

For a metal infused instrumental band, these guys tell a story their own way with their instruments. How they manage to seamlessly blend metal and rock from a range of eras is something worth listening to. It’s awesome.

It sounds cliche, but there really is something for everyone with this album. Melody, ambience, heavy riffs yet plenty of beautiful and haunting notes too. They sound tight and above all, they sound like a band that enjoys what they do.

Although it's hard to pick just one favourite, my stand out tracks would have to be, Division and Rapture. They’re devastatingly good. The kind that words can’t really describe; you just have to go listen. On that same note, I also felt Rapture would have also been a great closer for this album. It’s crescendo and gentle fade out is just perfect.

But, that really doesn’t matter because if you dig metal, or good music in any way shape or form, you will be in for a treat, and if you never tried the instrumental band path, then maybe it’s time to jump on board. It couldn’t hurt.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )
