Annie J - Single Review: Figured Out

05 Dec 2019 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Annie J has just released her new single Figured Out. Her music so far has made it to the NZ Top 50 Viral Chart, also streaming over 100,000, as well as reaching a semi-final place in the Unsigned Only Worldwide song writing competition. Annie J continues to bring a voice to the music, talent and insight of youth.

At 15, Annie J is creating music that is elevating and heartfelt. Her single asks the listener to release their inhibitions and embrace what she has created based on her experience with bullying. Annie J chooses to stay true to herself as a singer-songwriter and respond with music. The sound is upbeat and caters to the energy of pop music. Her lyrics are thoughtful and mature for her age; aiming to “give a lift to anyone in a similar situation”. She has soft vocals and mixes traditional rock instruments and electronic pop elements. Like her previous hits such as Whenever You Leave Me or By My Side, this song is melodic and catchy. As performer from a young age, Annie J is a motivator of dance, having trained in both classical and modern dance herself.

This young artist has a lot of talent and bravery for entering the music industry at her age with the incentive to uplift and inspire those around her. She has big plans for her future which include her travel to New York in 2020 as part of the Kiwi All Stars Musical Theatre Team. Having immersed herself in the playing field of other musicians, attending open mic nights, talent shows, community exhibitions; Annie J has clearly got a solid focus on her musical endeavours. Figured Out is available on steaming such as Spotify, Google Play, Deezer and YouTube.

About Annie J

At just 15, Annie J has already released three songs, attracting instant high listener appeal, with her first song Make Believe debuting on the New Zealand Viral Top 50. Annie J has performed with the New Zealand Opera in Carmen and Katya Kabanova and with the New Zealand Ballet in Don Quixote. Her training in classical and modern dance has inspired Annie J to make electronic infused music that motivates people to dance, all the while staying true to roots as a guitarist and singer-songwriter. Annie J’s music draws on influences from her favourite artists including Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande.

Her latest song Whenever You Leave Me marks Annie J’s transition to more mature song content, reflecting her life as a teenager and everything that comes with it.
