Max Earnshaw - Single Review: Lonely Love

22 Nov 2019 // A review by Erica McQueen

Lonely Love, the sophomore single from Max Earnshaw, is an absolute bop. Recorded at Parachute Studios with Daniel Martin, it’s solid a follow up to Temporarily and hopefully just the start of what’s to come from this talented Christchurch-born, Auckland-based song-writer.

The guitar comes in strong to kickstart this fast paced song. It then fades as the clear vocals begin. It’s the constant ebb and flow of the multi-layered full band sound, and stripped back sections, that keeps the song dynamic and engaging.

Gang vocals join in as Earnshaw repeats “lonely love” enough times to have you singing along by the time the chorus comes around again. About two thirds of the way through, we’re treated to a solid 25 second guitar heavy instrumental. Overall, the drumming is noticeably tight, vocal delivery smooth and recording crisp.

The song ends abruptly (in a good way), making you want to hit play again on this high-energy track, right away. Definitely a tune to add to your summer road trip playlist.

About Max Earnshaw

Max Earnshaw is a seasoned creator/performer of high-energy rock/pop. His upbeat music with astute lyrics, will stir you up and make you think about what's at stake. Max’s sound is full of driving rock instruments with surprising rhythmic off beats. Meanwhile, his powerful baritone voice cuts through with catchy melodic hooks that will stay with you long after the gig is over. Supported by blues and jazz influences, his sound is undoubtedly unique and his stage persona has an infectious energy and a captivating look – he will draw you in.

Max grew up as a performer and songwriter, busking on the streets of Christchurch from the age of 8. He went on to perform as a solo artist, in an acoustic duo, and as a front man he led his band (The Haze) to win SFRQ awards and the Regional Final. After years of playing the Christchurch scene, Max is currently a solo artist based in Auckland and backed by a full live band. With his band, he can often be found performing his heart out at venues like The Wine Cellar or Backbeat alongside graduates of the Auckland University Popular Music Program, like Harry Parsons, Openside and Daffodils.
