Georgia Lines - Single/Video Review: Never Had Love

24 Oct 2019 // A review by emcqs

Never Had Love is the sophomore single from Tauranga local, George. Co-written by Shannon Fowler (Tom Lark) and Mark Perkins (Merk), it’s another taster of her forthcoming debut EP.

The song starts quickly, first keys and then crispy vocals within the first bar. As the drums come in, the song settles into a slow groove. George’s soulful vocals soar above the meticulous instrumentation. The song is accented with little twinkles, digital sounds that add an ethereal element. If you’re familiar with the co-writer's releases, this comes as no surprise.

The accompanying music video is fun and whimsical. We first meet George on a tennis court, with a racquet straight out of the 80's. We follow her to an op shop, then cycling through the Auckland Domain. The tennis match resumes between shots at the beach. The vintage props continue through an eclectic mix of scenes. It’s a fun story to follow. A few captions are dotted throughout to support the narrative, a charming story to follow. The colour grading is noticeably soft, with beautiful tones, reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s work.

This shimmery pop single is definitely one to add to your summer playlists.

Lonely Love, the sophomore single from Max Earnshaw, is an absolute bop. Recorded at Parachute Studios with Daniel Martin, it’s solid a follow up to Temporarily and hopefully just the start of what’s to come from this talented Christchurch-born, Auckland-based song-writer.
